Umm, Soviet Union and many other nations had rise in living standarts after some time after revolution. They weren’t able to keep increase standarts of living in a long run, since centrally planned economies are uneffective, and they weren’t able to transform them in actual communism for numerous of reasons.

Western civilisation isn’t heading in this direction right now. Closest thing (kinda) were 60s and 70s when European nations (Canada included) and the US nationalised many indurstries and made huge amount of regulations of the capitalism (In Europe it was made in then name of Social Democracy, in the US in the name of Liberalism).

Looks like there’s argument between some lefists and some rightists on why this exactly didn’t work out. But the fact is that in 80s era of neoliberalism came, lowering taxes and privatization came back and with few exceptions, it’s remains today.

Can’t come soon enough, as Marx said, we have nothing to lose but our chains!
(unless you happen to be one of or related to a blue chip corporate owner in which case you’re probably already living a very comfortable life)

And millions will die so that a select few can impose equality by bringing everyone else down to the lowest level, just like every communist revolution.

Unfortunately, I believe you are right. That’s the direction Western Civilization is headed.
