While a decent theory it’s not really supported because they have a standard form that hasn’t changed much. And in fact scitwi and sunset were less ponylike in their daydream and midnight sparkle form when they had all that magic.
It might also explain odd things like principal celestia. The magic might force them to become like their counterparts in Equestria or even cause everyone to have a counterpart in the first place. Maybe the mirror is doing it since you know its a mirror.
