Disclaimer:
Yes, once again, the hat is currently not completely originally created by me. It’s been borrowed from CreatorOfPony’s AJ model, but with a lot of modifications to its material, color, and shape. Hopefully I’ll find a way to model the hat myself because I really would prefer that the models I make are truly 100% my own.
EDIT: zooms in Oh! You did! Cool.

In a pinch wave texture node -> mapping (to squish on one axis) -> normal map does the business, but if you have a better way I would love to
steallearn from it :)Won’t be doing microdisplacements for hair, but I think I’ll get some bump map indents along the hair when I get around to it.
You can just do that with a normal/bump map without having to add any extra topology. Or if one is feeling brace, there is always the new(ish) microdisplacement feature in 2.78
Perhaps they could be included as subtle dents in the mesh.
Just feels a bit too flat and couple probably have a little more of a hairlike texture to it, or some more points to demonstrate it being probably a little unkempt.
I personally think it looks fine with the current texture. If you brought in the lines that she has in 2D I feel it would just look out of place.
