Meh, I have no knowledge of any Sonic fandom. I just found most incarnations of the character I’ve come across rather obnoxious.
 
Then again, I’m not the one giving it downvotes, so my perspective may not be shared by those who do.

Well, as you said the Sonic series in general is a bit controversial, so for some folks, hating Sonic is kinda trendy, and like a bandwagon. Some have legit/understandable reasons to dislike him, or they just had too many bad experiences with him, or his fanbase.  
Still, some haters are almost obsessive as the rabid Sonic fans they complain about.
 
A guy here on Derpi used to give me crap for being a Sonic fan, and for standing up for the series/casual-fans.  
(Let that sink in a moment. A guy who loves a show for li’l girls is “nerd-shaming” others for liking a video game series.)  
Ironically, bronies that do that act no better then the Pony haters whom give them crap for liking MLP. So I don’t get it either.
 
Regardless, there actually quite a few casual Sonic fans here whom are very nice. In fact, people get along fine in the Sonic discussion thread in the Derpibooru forums.

yeah but the sonic fanbase has been around longer. So naturally it has that reputation.
 
My point was though it really shouldn’t be looked at by its worse angle and there’s no logical reason for people to assume the worst in someone when they see art like this. Exactly why everyone on this site has such a knee-jerk reaction to another fanbase like this honestly confuses me more.

Dude, I’ve seen weirder shit from this brony/MLP fanbase. lol  
Every fanbase has a weird side to them, some consider bronies worse then Sonic fans. So it’s not just Sonic fans that do/draw weird things, and such. Every fanbase has done weird stuff.
 
“Rick & Morty” fans & “Stephen Universe” fans have gotten pretty controversial too. (Over the Mcdonald’s sauce incident, and SU fans attacking a girl for drawing the character Rose thinner then she normally looks.)  
Some things other fanbases have done make both bronies & Sonic fans look normal.

Honestly the Derpibooru people hating sonic right now are becoming like idiots because they don’t know how to use filters!

There’s no reason that Sonic crossovers have to automatically looked as “cringy”, it’s just an unfortunate side effect of the very strange phenomenon that is the Sonic fanbase itself and what a large percentage of it has been like over the years. In some ways, the fanbase is kind of like the games themselves - hit and miss with a lot of embarrassments of the past. I’ve seen some WEIRD shit.
 
Even still, I like the idea of the characters at least. Even if I don’t really like the quality of what shows/games we’ve gotten over the past few years. And a few weirdos on deviant art shouldn’t stop anyone from expressing their like for the Sonic universe - especially if you actually do a good job with the art. I’ve seen some really weird/cheap designs, but honestly this incarnation of Sonic in the EQG universe looks pretty reasonable.

Sonic: Yo, you’re one of my fans, right? Go outside once and a while, or else you’re gonna be like that Chris-Chan fellow!

Or they just dislike humanized Sonic EqG crossovers, or crossover ‘shippings.  
Of course, they loooove all the anime, SU, TF2, Fallout, Portal, generic FPS games, ect. or those grimderp MLP fanart crossovers.
 
A guy here once tried to tell me the bad Sonic fanart here is more disturbing then the porn. That’s right, Sonic is officially more taboo then porn now! (I don’t know whether that’s hilarious, or very very sad.)
 
You’d think “Sonic Mania” would’ve quelled the trendy bandwagon hate a bit. I don’t love every Sonic game, or fanart piece either (at least this one is kinda funny, and at least decently drawn) but I still like the blue blur.
