Remember, when there’s an actual Reformation spell or Redemption spell until Grogar/Discord eat all of them.
If only they used the spell on three of them or just Chrysalis.
… that spell should have NEVER EXISTED in the first place (same thing with the Memory Stone); as it robs ponies from any HOPE of being able to change whatever “Status Quo” is set in place [Celestia & Twilight may be benevolent, but they are technically still Tyrants].
Likely because it was an easy plot resolution spell that turned one’s will against another. Like seriously, you think Celestia wouldn’t master that spell after turning Discord to stone or banishing Luna to the moon?

Maybe she learned it at some point in the past, but she is currently UNABLE to remember it (she always kept a copy of the book containing it, “hoarding information” like Tirek said back in “The Summer Sun Setback”).

It is implied that Celestia´s “permanent” version of the “(de-)age spell” (S3E05) that cursed!Trixie used on Snips [making him lose his cutiemak and knowledge of where he was and what happened to him (scared & crying)], also makes her young at the cost of losing all of the memories/skills acquired in the years she had to “take away” every few decades [in order for her to still be alive after 1000 years and be able to reunite with her sister Luna].

-> This is likely also why Equestria was kept “in technological stasis” up until the LAST time Celestia used this spell on herself (at least before starting mentoring making Sunset Shimmer); as otherwise it would be extremely difficult for her to RULE over a land that “works” by means she could not understand.

Why not going back to the past & using Starlight´s “book duplication” spell on one of those BEFORE Discord ate them all?
They can re-create the Time-Travel scroll/spell from Starswirl himself [even if he does not remember it from memory, with his help Starlight should be able to re-research her “enhanced” version].
-> Even if the cutiemap does not have its “full power” anymore, some of it still functions (as shown back in “Between Dark and Dawn” [S9E13]); so gathering enough “extra magic” should be easy with either the Staff of Saccanas or Grogar´s Bewitching Bell.

I really doubt that Golden Oaks Library had the only copy of those books anyway. I’m sure Canterlot has them (probably also in Celestia’s secret libraries).

It was rather clear that Discord used his “AWESOME_COSMIC_POWERS”™ to magically find ANY and ALL “references” to that particular spell [not just in Equestria but also any other “Realm” accesible from it (even those that only he knows about)], just in case they used something like the “Memory Stone” to “extract” their location FROM HIM & seek it.

If anything, only a “Land Without Magic” like the Equestria Girls universe may have had a copy of it that Discord would be unable to locate magically (even if he can open a rift into that world, he would have to find it “the slow way”).
-> The only known pony who could have resonably moved a magical book like that would be the unnamed earth pony “Sorceress” that also took the Memory Stone [the other UNKNOWN pony/creature would be whoever brought the timeloop artifact from Equestria to that waterstream in the woods near the location of the “Starswirl Music Festival” ].

What a disgrace. G3 showed a better message of friendship than this show.
Guess you should be glad it’s over with then…
I want to see you guys go down to the nearest prison, and see how many criminals, murderers, and such you can easily reform with the “power of friendship.”

And I want you to come to the nearest person with a modicum of logic and explain your asinine parallel you just tried to create while comparing killer rapists to villains in a children’s cartoon so you can see how stupid that point you made was…

We will probably see the real Grogar in the IDW comics since so many fans want the fight to happen and there’s no downside to it.

Eh, I found Grogar boring. The other three were much more fun.

But whatever, I guess. You can hate it if you want. I loved it, and that isn’t gonna change, so…have fun I guess? Probably not gonna reply further

I agree, Grogar would make such an awesome final boss! And I’d love it if they at least try to redeem him (and fail miserably).
If this season was willing to give bullies like Ahuizotl and Garble chances at redemption, it should’ve given the trio that same chance, but keep Grogar evil.

I agree with that 100%. That finale would make me very happy indeed. :)

This sums it up pretty well. I do think the fact that not everyone can be redeemed in the end due to their own personal choices, that’s something that needs to be demonstrated. We need to see the protagonists go through the hard lesson of trying to redeem someone, only for them to continually show us that they have no intent of changing their ways, and them having to accept that despite the fact they should always try for redemption, in the end not everyone wants it, and it’s on them to choose it.

Friendship is magic. Unless you’re Sombra, Cozy, Tirek, Chrysalis, Lightning or any other unredeemed.
I already thought I wanted individuals unredeemed to push forward the concept that not everyone can be redeemed, but in a show like this and when they showed that they weren’t irredeemable? What a shame. Either make them all out to be Sombra tier who show no drive for friendship, make them one offs in some 4th season finale, but don’t make them the finale villains who know friendship, who protect each other and who wouldn’t be in this situation if Discord didn’t set them up only to petrify them as the send off and the final word of what friendship is.
Smart Heart

Three returning villains working together is a much more personal ending than some blue goat who just showed up this season.

You forget. He was built up as the ultimate evil. The creator of all monsters. This season should’ve given the villains more to do. But instead, we got episodes like “Dragon Dropped,” “Point of No Return,” “2, 4, 6, Greeeat,” and “Trivial Problem.” Those episodes were completely unnecessary. If this season was willing to give bullies like Auhizotl and Garble chances at redemption, it should’ve given the trio that same chance, but keep Grogar evil. In the end, all I can say is season nine was nothing but chucked potential. Here’s hoping the comics give them the chance they were denied on the viewing screen.

I don’t understand why they bothered with this if the end result they wanted was NOT redeeming the villains (which I’m TOTALLY fine with!)
I actually like the message “you can’t redeem everything” (as it’s realistic), some are always going to be evil and simply don’t want to change. But you set them to be the opposite. You set them to understand friendship, you set them to sacrifice and take hits, not for self-gain, but to protect your friends..

How am I suppose to hate them?

As much as I like Chrysalis, she did mess things up both in Frenemies and in the finale. I think Twilight tried her best to get through to them, but Chrissy couldn’t keep her mouth shut and we know the result. Conversely, Tirek and Cozy Glow said nothing to try and save themselves, so they’re almost as much to blame.

It would have been nice if the villains had at least accepted friendship among each other, but felt thier style of friendship was superior, and vowed to avoid “corrupt” pony friendship. It may or may not have changed the outcome, but at least they would have some understanding of what friendship means.

@Smart Heart
I actually very much disagree. These three played off eachother well, and I think they were a much better final challenge. Grogar was boring by comparison. But three returning villains working together is a much more personal ending than some blue goat who just showed up this season.

That said, it is interesting to think what would have happened had this moment in Frenemies gone differently. If they had accepted friendship rather than doubling down on their wrath and desire for vengeance. Blame Chrysalis, I guess. She’s the one that ruined the moment, because of her own paranoia.

My headcanon is that this was why Discord wanted them to work together so badly. Of course, if they failed to learn friendship, then Twilight would simply defeat and imprison them again, but if they did, seeds would have been planted for redemption. But in the end, they lost themselves to their own ambition.

That said, maybe at some point, they’ll get unpetrified. Such spells have had a history of failing after time, and that is of course assuming Twilight doesn’t give each of them a second chance eventually. That is what Celestia did with Discord, afterall.
