I’ve got an idea, Scootaloo! What if we got you fitted with something to increase the strength in your wings? Like a harness with braces that clip to your wings that make them stronger so they can lift you!

I thought Scoots was 9 at the start of the series and 13 by the end. I mean the mane six as preteen fillies don’t look much different besides Fluttershy.

Regardless I admit, you have made some good points and if there was a 10th season or they did this in the comics, I would definitely say drop the student six and focus on getting Scootaloo in the air. The reason I got angry was because I thought you agreed with this… drek when Dashie would be nothing like that. She started a fanclub of her number one fan at the end of The Washouts. And she admitted it was her fault.

I do agree that the show should have at least made some kind of technology or effort like Tank for Scootaloo, and if the episodes could have been longer than 20 minutes, they would have put this at the end of Tanks for the Memories. The only problem is I think Scoots has accepted she can’t fly. I called you a G4 Season Wunner because I thought you were implying that Faust leaving was the moment the show jumped the shark. And I REALLY can’t stand those kinds of people especially since Faust only wrote one episode.

I think during the timeskip between The Ending of the End and The Last Problem, we’re supposed to… fill in the blanks which is why it’s ambiguous as to whether Fluttershy ended up with Discord, or Rainbow with Applejack. Obviously off screen Dash taught Scootaloo how to fly.

I apologize for not making myself clear and trying to discredit and insult your character.

I am not sure what a ‘G4 SeasonWunner’ is. If it is someone who holds everything from Season 2 onwards to be markedly inferior to Season 1 to the point of zealotry, then no, I am not that.

Like most people who say “Not trying to be rude”, you said so knowing full well you were about to be rude, and carried on regardless. Yes, I ‘FINISHED’ watching ‘Flight To The Finish’. I am well aware of what it shows Scootaloo doing, and indeed she shows immense wing power (at least relative to her size) over the course of the show. That does not undermine my point at all. In fact, it supports it, because it makes her inability to fly all the more peculiar.

It is clearly established that the Pegasus ability to fly is not simply a matter of wing power. For one thing, Pegasi regularly hover without flapping all that hard at all. There are simply too many examples of this to list. For another thing, in ‘Twilight’s Kingdom: Part 1’, Tirek drains the magic from a swarm of Pegasi, including Wonderbolts, and they drop from the sky like stones. If anything, these facts make Scootaloo’s struggle more worthy of further investigation.

The fact is, she cannot fly, and although she is given much love and support, it almost exclusively relates to either telling her she will fly one day without actually offering practical assistance, or telling her not to worry about it because she is awesome anyway.

I never denied that the writers did not want Scootaloo to fly, nor did I state that this ran contrary to Lauren Faust’s wishes. What I said is that they viewed it as nothing more than a plot element to be used when they felt like it, rather than an arc with any clear rules or direction. Hence why she is more capable of flight in Season 3 Episode 4 (‘One Bad Apple’) than Season 4 Episode 5 (‘Flight To The Finish’), less capable of flight in ‘Flight To The Finish’ than Season 4 Episode 19 (‘For Whom The Sweetie Bell Toils’), and then, as late as Season 8 Episode 20 (‘The Washouts’), states that she simply cannot fly. Clearly Season 9 Episode 22 (‘Growing Up Is Hard To Do’) and Season 9 Episode 26 (‘The Last Problem’) heavily imply she has an underlying condition, so it just would have been nice if there had been consistency and some attempt by somepony to actually discover and treat the root cause, even if the result was that she was simply disabled. Then again, that would assume a coordinated gameplan, and the show finished with Josh Haber suggesting that Luster Dawn might be Starlight Glimmer’s daughter, which would be ludicrous for reasons acknowledged by Jim Miller.

Just think! If they had addressed it properly, they could have had an episode where they discover that Scootaloo fundamentally has a magical handicap, and, after she becomes depressed and is consoled by Rainbow Dash, The Cutie Mark Crusaders try to find a prosthetic solution. Scootaloo studies and studies textbooks to develop a design, Apple Bloom helps with construction, Sweetie Belle with the aesthetics. In the end, it works! Scootaloo is able to fly using the device, gliding with Rainbow Dash and crying with happiness! And they all discover their secret talents together! Scootaloo is a genius of flight mechanics, becoming an advisor to The Wonderbolts. Apple Bloom is a brilliant engineer, building all sorts of farming equipment for her family. Sweetie Belle is a gifted painter and graphic designer, crafting all the murals and storefronts for Rarity’s boutique chain. That way, although Scootaloo is disabled, she refuses to let that stop her, and though she does not simply will her disability away, she ends up able to fly. The Cutie Mark Crusaders find their special talents through a singular event, just like The Mane Six, and yet their talents are explicitly tied to their sisters. That is a genuine, organic payoff, and better than how it was actually handled.

I never suggested that Rainbow Dash was less supportive of Scootaloo than her parents or aunts. Yes, I saw the episode where they revealed why Diamond Tiara was a jerk (it was ‘Crusaders Of The Lost Mark’). Yes, Rainbow Dash sang about her pride in Scootaloo. I never denied it.

You seem to believe that I argued that Rainbow Dash is not in any way supportive of Scootaloo, which is odd, as I absolutely did not say that. My point is that Scootaloo is surrounded by ponies who care about her, and shower her with love and support, Rainbow Dash most of all, and yet none of them seem to actually realise just how anomalous her situation is, or do anything constructive to fix the problem. Rainbow Dash attaches a magical device to her brand new pet tortoise that helps him fly instantly. She does not take any step to help Scootaloo fly throughout the show’s entire run that is that effective. That is odd, to say the least.

Given that, as you say, Scootaloo seems to have tremendous wing strength, the fact that she is unable to fly suggests some deeper problem. The fact that Bulk Biceps is able to fly despite having both a much larger body and smaller wings means Scootaloo has some other issue. It is bizarre that Scootaloo seems to be preoccupied with the size of her wings given that she is surrounded by ponies her own age with bodies and wings of the same size who can fly just fine. And yet not one pony over the show’s entire run seems to act on these things. Not Rainbow Dash, who is Scootaloo’s adoptive big sister and Equestria’s greatest flyer. Not Twilight Sparkle, powerful Unicorn-then-Alicorn and keen student of pony history and biology. Not Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo’s close and loyal friends. Nopony.

Just think of it this way: A group shows multiple signs of loving a child who is 5 and cannot walk even though it appears physically fine and all its classmates can walk no problem. This group tells the child that it does not matter whether or not it ever walks, because it is awesome anyway. They sing loving songs to the child. They defend the child against bullies. All that is wonderful. Nonetheless, if no member of said group ever took the child to the doctor or made any attempt at all to discover why the child was unable to walk despite how distressed the child was about its situation, they would rightly be called clueless at best and cruel at worst.

Are you one of those G4 SeasonWunners? Not trying to be rude, but did you FINISH watching Flight to the Finish? It shows Scootaloo keeping up with RD while she’s using her scooter with her wings to propel her, to drag two equally sized fillies along with her?

And another thing. I’m pretty sure they didn’t want Scootaloo to fly as Faust herself admits Scootaloo was meant to be a character with a disability. And if anything, Rainbow’s been more supportive of Scootaloo than both Scoots’ aunts and parents. Did you see the episode where they revealed why Diamond Tiara was a jerk? Rainbow sang a gentle song about how proud she was of Scootaloo.

@marley
Amen. Post-Faust, the writers simply did not think about the characters that deeply. They viewed Scootaloo’s struggle to fly as a well to return to, and nothing more.

They wanted Tank to be fitted with a magical flying device for ‘May The Best Pet Win’. The fact that in a practical sense Rainbow Dash did more in that one episode to help her brand new pet tortoise fly than she did to help Scootaloo fly in the show’s entire run? They either did not realise or did not care. Just barking vague encouragement is nice, but does not address the problem.

In ‘Flight To The Finish’, Rainbow Dash’s “Maybe you’ll fly someday, or maybe you won’t. You’re all kinds of awesome anyway.” is a lovely sentiment and totally true, but whether she does really matters to Scootaloo, and she is essentially left flapping in the breeze. Perhaps “Look squirt, I’ll love you no matter what, but I can see you’re putting in an awesome amount of effort trying to fly, so I think we need to talk to Twilight and maybe Nurse Redheart to find out what’s holding you back.” would have been helpful.

Then there is ‘The Washouts’, when Scootaloo literally tearfully shouts ‘I can’t fly!’ into Rainbow Dash’s face, and Rainbow Dash just……lets her give up, basically, rather than saying, “Scootaloo, you’re my sister and I love you, so I hate how being unable to fly has hurt you. Let me find out what the problem is once and for all. That’s gotta be better than Lightning Dust strapping you to rockets.”

Sorry for the rant, and I have way more to say on this subject, but I found the encouragement and love nice, but the lack of practical investigation ultimately cruel.

Something I’ve always questioned is why nobody ever took Scoots to a doctor. Not her parents, her aunts, RD or even the princesses thought to do that.
