The other issue was that AoS looks like half generic fantasy and half 40k (hence Sigmar the bearded Emprah and his stormcast sigmarines), while FB had more from real history and 40k itself started as its space opera parody.

Mmmh. I see.
I knew there was a predecessor, I thought it was just called Fantasy.
Killing a lot of life at once hopefully wasn’t something they did lightly. They may be a company, but certainly they didn’t do it just to push models?

Kind of.
WHFB was a pretty beloved setting and ending it out of the blue just to push a new line of models felt like a slap to the face to a lot of people, myself included.
Especially if you consider that Warhammer has always been a multiverse and they could have easily done AoS as a what if senario or alternate reality. Instead we got the End Times, which were not only remarkably badly written, but also killed off a lot of beloved characters or changed them beyond recognition.
Of course that doesn’t justify bashing AoS or the people who enjoy it, but it killed any interest I personally had in the game.

Warhammer Fantasy Battles, the Predecessor to AGe of Sigmar.
GW blew the world and setting (which had 20+ years of lore and history behind them) up to make room for AoS. WHich pissed of a lot of longtime fans.
Not AoS’ fault of course, but for a lot of people it serves as a reminder of what was lost.
