Because those characters tend to be the active sort, and when you have a narrative, you tend to need people that do things alot.

Just… I wonder why people love sporty, egotistic characters more than a nerdy bookworm, scientist as lead protagonists? (Yeah, we saw Dash-like protagonists, like Eddy, Sonic more than Twi-like protagonists, such as Edd, Tails as the lead protagonists in many cartoon medias) From the comments section, as a nerd and scientific person myself, I am unamused. Lauren would feel the same.
 
I still like both Twi and Dashie, but I personally trust Twilight more as a lead protagonist than Dashie, if Dashie is, Fluttershy would be pushed over too often, the only pony who can handle Dash well is Pinkie (Ed personality).

I have to revisit this considering the fact that Rainbow Dash has had a minor role in one and a major role in two of the six episodes so far for season 4.
 
Any more and it really will be the Rainbow Dash Show.
