I don’t see how this guy is so much of a threat. All he had is mind control and nothing else. Punching him in the face would have solved the problem, not sinking Equestria. And I still don’t get why they turned to stone. This is all so dumb.

Mostly because they couldn’t keep him in that trap forever and that as soon as he got out of it he’d try and get the elements again and wouldn’t stop until he had them and all of equestria under his rule.

It may seem like that, but bear in mind it was the only thing they could do. Using the elements would have just given him what he wanted, and anything else would have resulted in innocent civilians getting hurt.
