The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@TexasUberAlles: The point I’m trying to get at, though, is that the show didn’t really explore the reasons behind Nightmare Moon’s imfamy at all, and only explored Luna’s guilt in one episode. The comics, on the other hand did both, with Luna’s guilt being pretty much why Luna’s mane looked as it did during an event that takes place mid-Season 3. Arguably making it difficult to justify both of those things without the comics. If such things are gonna keep going the way they’ve been going thus far, I dare say that Nightmare Moon’s infamy and Luna’s guilt will become even harder to justify without EU material such as the comics.

And it doesn’t help that, during the Nightmare Moon flashback scene in Princess Twilight Sparkle, Nightmare Moon is shown to be contained before doing any damage beyond destroying parts of the Castle of the Two Sisters.

And a minor detail, but I also find that the comics also justify what Nightmare Moon tries to do to the Mane 6 in what those actions lead to.

I’m not so sure about that…What about Babs Seed’s comic with Rarity? The timing and correlation between comic and her cutie mark reveal in the episodes was impeccable, it honestly felt like a missing episode that was sent to be a comic. It even had Rarity give MAJOR character development about her childhood and growing up.

No, because the concept of convergent evolution would still exist; if the comics do a thing and the show does a similar thing, that doesn’t mean they’re doing things in unison any more than bats and bugs both having wings means they have a common ancestor within the last 500 million years.

Sorry to necro this guys, but I’ve been thinking about something related to what I’ve seen on TV Tropes as of late. But would Luna’s characterization, as we’ve seen it so far in the show, falsify the statement shown in the picture above?

You know, if you really wanted to let the thread die, you could’ve just left it alone. Now I’m commenting on what I think of your response, on top of the other guy necroposting for discussion’s sake.

Actually, it seems like you’re making his point for him. Twilight being a dork was always part of her character, but it wasn’t as overstated as in later seasons, starting with S2. Lesson Zero’s a great episode in that’s silly, wacky and fun to watch, but it did also set a staggering precedent for flanderizing her character in later episodes, not the least of which was It’s About Time, which I liked better than Lesson Zero.

Honestly, dude, I think you’re being too hard on Look Before You Sleep here. Remember that before she came to Ponyville, she never actually had friends or spent time with them long enough to learn the simple girly joys of slumber parties and pillow fights. She’d read about it, though, because she’s well read. So naturally, she’s going to go by the book. This is what she knows. She doesn’t know spontaneity or fun like Pinkie Pie, but she’s not a robot, otherwise she would’ve have been interested or brought it up in the first place. As for Rarity and Applejack, it’s not that they hated each other, it’s that they just didn’t get along that well. Their interests and personalities were at odds with each other, for reasons that are easy to see: one’s a farm pony that likes to get dirty and work outside, and the other’s a fashion designer that likes to be inside and pretty.

Pretty much.

That being said, does this mean that the writers won’t be taking the best concepts from the comics and integrate them into the series like they said they would a while back? Cause that would be a complete and utter waste.

I can understand the need to not have the show reference the comic, there is a knowledge disparity between the two mediums afterall. However, a lot of really, really cool ideas came from the comics, and not every single comic has to included.

(besides, the most recent comics were done between S5 and Twilight getting her gaudy castle. Story potential in terms of time setting are not high, yet I still found Discord’s adventure with Fluttershy and the CMC hilarious. And Spitfire’s comic, while not as good, reconciled BOTH sides of Spitfire’s personality traits in her casual cameos with RD, and her personality in Wonderbolts Academy…while pretending her Lightning Dust personality in Rainbow Falls never happened. That was a good day.)

Besides, this isn’t the first time that lesser known stuff has been used to amp up the excitement even with a knowledge disparity.

Take for example the second trailer for Twilight’s Kingdom. A friendly pony finds this cloaked figure and tries to be kind, only to have the cloaked figure speak in the most daunting, creepy voice with nothing but merciless intentions. Then the guy suddenly sucks out the pony’s soul and claims to be none other then Lord Tirek. Even though only a small percentage of the fandom knew much about G1 Tirek, the hype was off the charts!!!….then they decided to switch his personality for the rest of the episode, and Twilight’s Kingdom devolved into a much dumber story, even if the fight visuals were awesome enough to get fans temporarily excited.

Point is, just because the comics and the series should stay separate, doesn’t mean that the comic shouldn’t influence the series based on what did work in the comics and what didn’t work in the series based on feedback. We were excited to see Lord Tirek’s return because he was awesome in MLP, even when it was 30 years ago. Things from the comic and actually displaying them well in the series would be a golden opportunity.

yeah.. see, this is why I made a big deal of Celestia and Luna being handwaved in a similar fashion, but in a situation that required their attention given that innocent ponies’ lives were at stake in that particular story, which I shouldn’t be needed to mention that it isn’t the same as a sleepover slumber party.

thing is, with Twilight being given the idiot ball I didn’t care too much about that, heck, I didn’t care too much about any of that episode, it was just decent enough to watch through it and move on, had a moment or two here and there, the rest was super mediocre quality jokes, about, Marshmallow square put in chocolate, in between square graham crackers…
I had to look at the transcript word for word just to get it right and yes, I think that’s what that joke was all about.

Rarity: Then you place one marshmallow on the top of the chocolate and be sure it’s centered – that’s critical – and then carefully put another perfectly square graham cracker on the top. And done. Ta-da! [laugh]

[laughs externally but is actually crying inside]

though, at least the next lines were a little funnier.

Applejack: Nah, ya just eat ’em. [munch] Mmm-mmm! [belch]
Rarity: [sigh] You could at least say excuse me.
Applejack: Aw, I was just about to, but you interrupted me. Pardon.

ah Aj.. you’ve always been my favorite of the mane ponies for a good reason.

I doubt Hasbro talks to DHX at all. They go through Meghan. Once DHX has the script, it’s their toy, and they decide how to put various background elements together. This is why Bon Bon has about five different voice inflections over the course of the series.
