Derpibooru has had a good idea with its art commissioner’s list. I’ve used it with successful results a couple times. However some imperfections include not really having a current availability slots list for a given artist (which would be kinda tricky on-site anyway depending on the person) and best communication times.

I’ve thought of an opposite concept: people looking to rent artists can pitch their ideas and get (most effectively) PM’ed by readily commissionable artists the info on cost, details, limitations, etc.

If this idea has already been discussed, my apology, feel free to delete.

I really don’t see this idea being useful,for a number of reasons:

It’s just reversing the problem too. What if someone puts a “want to buy” ad, but then doesn’t take it down after they find an artist?
It puts more burden on the artists to get customers, as that would be making the artists put more effort into finding customers. The system we have now (where the customer initiates a commission by browsing our commission directory) is meant to be as easy, organized, and efficient for the artist and customer as possible.
Best communication times are irrelevant, as most people prefer email or PM for communication, which is very accommodating of response fimez. The few who prefer an IM system such as Discord generally will have to wait til both parties are online, regardless of who initiated contact.

Solutions could include a time window of relevance on a post. I’m sure more can be brainstormed.
The way I see it, it puts no burden at all. If an artist answers they answer. If the don’t, they don’t. It’s very freelance.
PM and email have failed me for a few I prefer not to name. They just don’t correspond.
