“The Pontiac Aztek is… better… than the Lexus LFA”
-Doug DeMuro, 2017

Out of context quoting aside, I generally agree with him. I’d go for an Aztek over a cookie-cutter crossover any day. And he didn’t mention it, but the AWD system on the Aztek was legitimately good- something like 70% of the engine’s power could be directed to the rear wheels, and from there it could be directed entirely to either one of them.

I noticed the Aztek a couple times already, starting in the “Ugliest Cars of All Time” lists which I haven’t always agreed with 100%. Somehow I don’t think the Aztek or Buick Rendezvous look bad except for the spoiler on the Aztek’s rear window; that just plain hurts visibility, why’s it on there? I don’t imagine it giving much crash protection. A comment about the tent: While a fun feature, this isn’t new to cars (and no, Doug didn’t say it was.) I’ve seen pictures from the 60s of Station Wagons with tents attached to them. I like the windshield squirters being in the wipers, Mom’s 2001 Impala has that same feature.

I’d imagine so though 24” rims don’t provide much room for suspension travel. I meant it has the proportions of a powerboat with the massive hood and the navy blue paint, white interior, and wooden floorboards also play up the nautical look.

True. Regular size wheels are fine with me but the large wheels do suit the car.

I like this iteration of Maybach more than the last time Mercedes tried to revive the brand. I remember that from an auto show about 10 years ago. They had this Maybach limo with an open roof for the chauffeur separate from the cabin, as if to remind him of his place. I considered it crass.

This one looks a lot better thought out than the Murano was, though.

I’m guessing the hemis are safe, considering how much of Dodge’s image is built around them. I just hope they get the Giulia’s abysmal quality control fixed before they try to use the platform for more mass-market cars.

I’d like to be a fly on the wall at Alfa to see what’s going on over there. There must be something deeply wrong at the corporate level for them to have botched their reentry into the US market so badly. The press cars that you’d think would be the best Alfa has to offer have had so many problems it’s almost comical. All the advertising and media coverage is focused on the Quad when it’s the regular model that most people would actually buy. I also think the Giulia in both base and Quad models is overpriced for what it is. If Alfa was smart they would overcome their poor reputation like Hyundai did by lowering prices, offering excellent warranties, and continuously improving their vehicles.

The Giulia chassis at least ought to be ok. That’s all welded by robots.

Maybe what FCA should do is take the Giulia chassis and stuff in all the LX mechanicals and electronics with as few changes as possible. They’ve got to have those figured out by now, right?

A six-passenger car (van?) that’s smaller than a C2 Corvette; That’s some seriously impressive space efficiency, and it’s pretty neat-looking too. I’d hate to get into a crash in that, though.
