Hmm. Well, definitely check out
Tron: Legacy. It uses a perfect mixture between Daft Punk’s electronic music and symphonic elements that fit each scene near perfectly.
An older movie that has a lot of different great soundtracks is
Metropolis, whether you prefer the most recent symphonic scores, electronic ones, a score consisting entirely of Muse songs (I made that one), or one featuring ‘80s pop produced by Giorgio Moroder. Actually, listen to any movie soundtrack by Moroder, because in addition to producing half the ‘80s pop hits you know, he’s also great with movie scores.
Cat People,
Scarface,
Flashdance… I may be missing some others.
And also, anything by Vangelis. He started off as the keyboardist for the psychedelic/prog rock band Aphrodite’s Child before moving on to movie soundtracks like
Chariots of Fire,
Blade Runner, and
Missing.
Last, but not least… and I warn you, this is an incredibly obvious choice for me…
Phantom of the Paradise, the 1974 cult classic horror musical. Its soundtrack, written by Paul Williams, is in my opinion a perfect pastiche of the nostalgia wave, surf rock, metal, disco, as well as featuring some rather beautiful ballads. Stand-out songs are “Faust,” “Somebody Super Like You,” and “Life At Last.”
