The Great Molasses Flood was a deadly, non-water flood that occurred on January 15th, 1919 in Boston, Massachussetts when a tankard containing 2,300,000 gallons of molasses tipped over and flooded the city with the brown, sticky substance. As a result, 21 people were killed and 150 were injured as it took weeks to clean up the mess and Boston Harbor was stained brown for months. It is said that on hot summer days, the streets still smell of molasses.
