Pretty sure it’s never explained. I think there was a handwave about the Purge letting people just get the feeling and urges to commit crime out, but that’s pretty weak.

It was just a really bad justification for a house invasion movie in the first one. The later two at least somewhat followed up on the premise by expanding the scope, but again. For a premise that says flat out “All crimes are legal” there sure doesn’t seem to be much interest in any crime that doesn’t involve murder.

It’s the all bakers fault, gotcha.

@Dustcan
Pretty much. It was an uncreative way to weasel out of why nobody calls the cops for these types of movie, which is unfortunate because the premise could be much more than it was. It could’ve easily been a cautionary tale of the follies of human morality when there is no strict guideline to help it, and beneath a veneer of civilization humanity hasn’t progressed much since our days fighting each other with spears and swords. It almost sounds like it could be a perfect idea for a Twilight Zone episode.

…But they threw all that out the window for generic horror/revenge movie cliches.

This is an interesting bit of movie trivia and the trope Hilarious in Hindsight.

The 2002 film The Count of Monte Cristo with Jim Caviezel as its protagonist Edmond Dantes, gives him long hair and a beard from all those years of incarceration. He later played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ. The movie also makes Dantes the biological father of Albert Mondego, who was played by the actor Henry Cavill.

This would mean that Jesus was the father of Superman.
