Wow, how dumb is that? I mean, here in France, we have the FN who pretty much appropriated Joan of Arc as a French nationalist symbol (because of the whole “kick the English out” thing she ran on during the Hundred Years War) and every First of May they gather at the bottom of
her statue in Paris, while the left celebrates International Workers Day a few blocks away. And yet, even those who resent this nationalist appropriation of a piece of French history the most would
never ask that this statue be torn down.
As for the statues of Philippe Pétain and streets named after him, the last one of each has been removed and renamed two and four years ago respectively, amidst general indifference in both cases (which is pretty much poetic justice, considering Pétain let the Nazis tear and smelt down so many statues during the war).
Oh, and I heard the city of New York was about to remove a plaque bearing his name that was there since 1931 (when Pétain was still just the hero of Verdun, and not a Nazi puppet yet). About time, if you ask me (and I don’t think any French will disagree, except of course Marine Le Pen and her cronies).
