Eh. I’ve started re-watching Gundam Wing on Hulu just yesterday (I hadn’t watched the show since I was 5-6, when Toonami was still airing it). And I’m kinda surprised Cartoon Network butchered it for the daytime version. Yeah there was quite a bit of blood and gore, and not to mention some language here and there, but it’s hardly anything shocking or provocative (I know the editing was to attract more advertising, but still…).

By contrast, an average episode of NYPD Blue had more graphic violence, stronger language, alcoholism, some nudity and sex, and other disturbing shit. Somehow that gets a TV-14 rating while the unedited Gundam shows get slapped with TV-MA ratings.

Someone make it make sense.

People see a cartoon, assume it’s for kids, see it’s got adult themes, overrate the fuck out of it.

Many cartoons contain adult jokes even TV-Y like Bluey, one episode the parents mention in Whale Watching offscreen they were so drunk, they did stuff that the kids wouldn’t understand.

That doesn’t explain why a show with more blatant adult content and violence gets a lower content rating than one where such content is either minor or coincidental. If an unedited dub of Sonic X came to the US and it got slapped with a TV-MA rating, despite the content not being that indecent or obscene, the fans would understandably be furious.

My favorite part is where companies in the US try to retrofit and retcon characters or things the characters say and do to make it “ok” for the US-centric “Graphic violence is perfectly fine but never ever touch or show a boob!”

Like making a lesbian couple “cousins” - because for some reason incest is better for sensitive American audiences, or making a character who is IN CANON a hermaphrodite one and only one gender.

Because … why. Just why. Just let Haruka-san be non-binary. How could that POSSIBLY hurt the franchise or offend American audiences? She’s a freaking fictional character, the manifestation of celestial powers in a body that only coincidentally appears to be a human. How is it important to give THAT kind of being a specific gender? Just let her race cars and tease and date the other sailors. Why are American corporations so worried about what she has in her pants?

But, hey - at least I’m not bitter.
