Another Jeff Beck song that I like was when he appeared on a little known song from 2013, a cover of Gasoline And Matches by pop country singer LeAnn Rimes and Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas.

Seeing that the music world has survived the conversions to 45 RPM vinyl records, the advent of radio, television performances, the variety show, the conversion to cassette tapes, MTV and music videos, synthesizers and other dance equipment, the conversion to CD’s and MP3’s, autotune and streaming platforms like YouTube, Spotify, Vine and currently Tik Tok, it’s safe to say that music is not and never will be “ruined”
@TheHappySpaceman
Yeah I knew, and it’s a really great song to boot.

The introduction of the phonograph too, because as John Philip Sousa would have it in 1906:
“These talking machines are going to ruin the artistic development of music in this country. When I was a boy… in front of every house in the summer evenings, you would find young people together singing the songs of the day or old songs. Today you hear these infernal machines going night and day. We will not have a vocal cord left. The vocal cord will be eliminated by a process of evolution, as was the tail of man when he came from the ape.”
Granted, some argue that he wasn’t completely wrong there - definitely alarmist, but the introduction of these technologies did change the music world to the point that the way things were done 130 years ago just looks completely irrecognizable to us now. What we don’t know is what direction those new changes will take.

After all, there were people thought Rock ‘n’ Roll would kill the music industry way back in the 50s, in addition to “corrupting today’s youth”, and hoped it would be on its way out because they were scared of it. And here we all are now - People still love Rock music, and there’s a great many people who still appreciate older genres like Jazz and Chamber music (or “Classical”). Eventually, people either adapt and embrace or roll with the punches, and individual/collective creativity lives on.

TikTok is definitely leading to shorter attention spans for music, though. Like the fact that nowadays you’ll get hit songs that only have two verses, no bridge, and are gone before you even have time to think about them, is something I squarely blame on TitKok. I’m not the only one who’s noticed this, too—Todd in the Shadows had a whole bit about it in his “Unholy” review.

True, but the same can be said for old rock fans considering so many musicians like Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon died in the 70s and 80s. On the bright side, at least we were all old enough to witness classic rock bands before everyone died.
@TheHappySpaceman
TikTok has only brought harm and I’ll be glad if it gets banned. Clearly most people don’t care about the actual music and only listen to stuff just because it’s popular, but I don’t need to keep repeating that. I can see why many prefer shorter songs but TikTok encouraging every song to be under 2 minutes or whatever is ridiculous, this coming from someone who listens to a lot of progressive rock, where the songs sometimes take up an entire album or at least one side of an album (so over 20 minutes).
Don’t you mean music is not and never will be “dead”? Yes, music is still alive but apart from CDs, all of that stuff (and especially MTV and autotune) some of that stuff including MTV and autotune ruined popular music, but it didn’t kill it since most people don’t care.

MTV didn’t ruin popular music.
Unless you’re going with the whole “It used to be about the music, man, but then MTV made it all about the image!” thing, which. Isn’t true. Image always played a huge part since the dawn of popular music. As an example, black artists back in the 1950s often had to put pictures of white people on their single covers to get aired.
Edit: Wait, @Mr.Myoozik also listed casette tapes and synthesizers as part of that. How did those ruin music? Synthesizers significantly advanced music as an art form. (Yes, I am saying this as an avid keyboardist and synth player. If anything, mainstream modern rock hasn’t relied enough on synths.)

I’ve seen a lot of MTV music videos and most of the videos are like that, being all about the image and having the coolest video, and most 80s music videos I’ve seen are cringe unless they’re performance videos. At least before MTV most videos were just videos of the band performing the song, sometimes with a background. Compare the old Beat Club videos from the late 60s and early 70s to MTV videos and you’ll see what I mean.
That said, there were music videos from the 60s and 70s, videos like The Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever and David Bowie’s Space Oddity, but the performance videos far outweighed MTV-like music videos. MTV didn’t start the idea but it did popularize it, though I feel like the whole “it’s all about the image” thing would have became popular regardless of whether MTV existed or not.

I’ve seen videos and newspaper articles of the time where you have these old people decrying rock n roll as the devil’s music and even something made by the communists and seeing that rock has changed, wonder what they’ll think of metal, they will have heart attacks. XD

I know that definitely happened when gangsta rap came and Ice-T released a song about killing cops, the moral guardians were hyperventilating in paper bags or when NWA came and basically popularized expletives in rap.

From what i’ve seen, these kinds of people usually don’t really see any difference between rock and metal. You go to things like Chick tracts and Rock: It’s Your Decision and you’ll find suckers putting The Beatles and Captain & Tennille on the same bag as Mötley Crue and AC/DC.
And the most ridiculous is that the whole controversy quickly became about rap when the song that sparked it all was a metal song that happened to be sung by a rapper.

Don’t remind me of Rock: It’s Your Decision, that movie is a travesty to filmmaking as a whole.
I know, it also shows how these people are out of touch about both rap and metal.

Well, as someone who has always liked the merging of music and visuals, I do not see the problem with music videos as an art form and an interpretation of the song, but different strokes for different folks, I guess.
@Mr.Myoozik
Probably for the best. The only good TikTok videos are B. Dylan Hollis’s cooking vids, anyway.
