I know that title may sound confusing, but it’ll make more sense as you read this post.

A few days ago I was watching a video by Guru Larry entitled 5 Times Other Media Shamelessly Stole from Video Games (Click here if you wanna watch it). While I thought the examples he provided were pretty good, the comments section didn’t think so. The vast majority of comments on the video all argued that the examples were not stolen, but rather inspired/references/homages/etc. without providing any proof that they are.

I posted a comment of my own asking people if they had proof those examples were not stolen, but so far no one has given me any. That’s where I turn to you guys:

Can any of you tell me the difference between stealing an idea from someone else and using it as inspiration? Also, do you think any of the examples in Larry’s video were acts of plagiarism? If not, could you provide me some evidence to back up your claims?

Essays have a really defined line about this. Video game media is a lot different.
I’d say story wise, it should definitely be seperate and unique from others because copyright is like that. Developement wise, as long as the code was crafted by hand it shouldn’t really matter.

The difference between stealing an idea and using it as inspiration is that when someone steals an idea, they take someone else’s original idea and use it as their own without giving credit to the original source. On the other hand, when someone uses an idea as inspiration, they take an idea and build upon it, incorporating it into their own unique creation and giving credit to the original source for inspiring them.
Whether the examples in Larry’s video were acts of plagiarism depends on the specific circumstances surrounding each example. Without more information about each specific case, it’s difficult to make a definitive determination. However, if the media in question took an idea from a video game and used it as their own without giving credit to the original source, then it could be considered plagiarism.
