@Mikey
I love Id software and the game design philosophy behind the Doom series.
However, I feel like it depends on the game for me. IMHO, Prey (2017) would have been a 6.75/10 if you greatly reduced or eliminated the amount of dialogue, emails, cutscenes, transcribes, etc. And gave it less-to-no story. Instead, they made such a fantastic, emotional, mindfuck of a story that it was a 8.5 for me, and would’ve been a 9.5 or 9.75 if it weren’t for the frequent long loading times. I can’t wait for the PS5 with that high speed next generation SSD so I can experience how the game is really meant to be played, instead of having the second half of the game be this series of tiny bits of gameplay stuck between long loading screens.
Now
Doom (2016) felt like about a 9 or so to me, a really fantastic game. But that’s a case where the story didn’t matter as much (as Id Software’s design philosophy of prioritizing gameplay first really shines on that game.) It probably would’ve
still been an 8.5 or 8.75 IMHO if you got rid of the story. That kinda just comes down to design philosophy ya know?
Edit:aw crap sorry I thought I was in the unpopular opinion thread again.
