When I was a kid I thought Sinnoh was supposed to be set in France or somewhere in northern Europe.
Maybe it was because of the main characters fashionable attire or Maylene (even if she seems to be from another region).

Maybe a twist where the elite four are the true villains, and the “villainous team” just see you and gym leaders as a pawn of theirs. Maybe hint at that at how they treat civilians and non-trainers.
