Vintage shoot’em up games (Space Invaders, Galaga, etc.) are actually descended from bowling
Why?
Bowling is a target sport, where you launch a projectile (a bowling ball) to take down targets (the pins)
Shoot’em up is basically the same principle, you shoot lasers to destroy enemies just like throwing bowling balls into pins

Historically, Space Invaders was influenced by Breakout, which in turn was made as a solitaire version of Pong. But the analogy to bowling isn’t far off. In vintage arcade games, levels are known as “racks”, just like a set of bowling pins or billiard balls.

Furthermore, bowling itself descended from skittles, a game where you throw a large wooden disc (shaped like a block of large cheese) onto a formation of bottle-shaped targets, which later evolved into bowling pins
