Every day for three months, Jessica Long’s young daughter walked and fed her goat, bonding with the brown and white floppy-eared animal named Cedar. But when it was time for Cedar to be sold and slaughtered at the Shasta District Fair last year, the 9-year-old just couldn’t go through with it.
Long purchased the goat for her daughter to enter into the 4-H program with the Shasta District Fair. Children are taught how to care for farm animals. The animals are then entered in an auction to be sold and then slaughtered for meat in hopes of teaching children about the work and care needed to raise livestock and provide food, as farmers and ranchers do.
In her letter, Long pleaded for the fair to make an exception and let her and her daughter take Cedar back. Aware that Cedar had already been sold in auction, she also offered to “pay you back for the goat and any other expenses I caused,” according to the letter obtained by The Times.
Instead, officials reached out to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. Armed with a search warrant, detectives drove more than 500 miles across Northern California in search of the goat.
Echoing language used when law enforcement search a home for drugs, the warrant allowed deputies to “utilize breaching equipment to force open doorway(s), entry doors, exit doors, and locked containers” and to search all rooms, garages and “storage rooms, and outbuildings of any kind large enough to accommodate a small goat.”
“It was never about money,” said Vanessa Shakib, an attorney for Advancing Law for Animals who represents Long. “County officials were clear that they wanted to teach this little girl a lesson.”
“Making an exception for you will only teach [our] youth that they do not have to abide by the rules,” Silva wrote back to Long in an email reviewed by The Times dated June 28, 2022. “Also, in this era of social media this has been a negative experience for the fairgrounds as this has been all over Facebook and Instagram.”
So basically, girl gets a goat as part of a program to teach young ranchers about the raising and eventual slaughter of farm animals for food. Girl gets attached to the goat so her mom offers to buy it. County officials then have police search up and down the state to kill the girl’s goat “to teach her a lesson”.
Great to see our law enforcement used to such great effect.

As India grows to be the most populous country on earth, it’s labour struggles and labour rights grows to immense importance. Unfortunately, it ain’t looking too good
The concept of giving a notice before doing a strike is ludicrous in it of itself, but even more ludicrous is giving a company two fucking months to prepare for one
The other rules are severely impact worker’s rights to organise
The new rules state that a trade union must represent more than 51 per cent of the workforce to serve as the sole representative in a factory.
Previously, companies with more than 100 employees needed government approval to lay off workers, but this threshold has been increased to 300 employees. This means that companies with up to 300 employees can now lay off workers without government approval, which will make it easier for companies to hire and fire employees without providing job security

Yeah, while “defund the police” might not be good optics for non-leftists, the concept has gotten increasingly more attractive, even AFTER legacy media worked overtime to memory hole all the police violence on display in 2020 in favor of b-rolls of commercial property damage (because property is more valuable than human life).

I mean I really don’t see that shift. sure there where people who where upset at the uvalde police a well as other incidents involving individual police officers but i don’t think that means moderates and republicans want to abolish the police. Just my perspective.

Even if that’s the case it seems like its more of a “police lack adequate training” problem like in the case where that one officer wanted to taze a suspect and actually shot him or in others were a lack of training causes the officer to fear for his life an shoot the suspect when other tactics could’ve been used. It just seems from my perspective that defunding the police only serves to weaken police training. Am I wrong?

I think outside of countries that are ran by literal dictatorships, the US probably has the worst record when it comes to the police and how they handle things.
Maybe it’s becuase im from a small town that’s not in America, but we got a good relationship with the police and there has been no trouble with them. Seeing that and comparing it to the shitshow that is the US police, it’s nuts

Also, it’s because of the sheer quantity of issues the police in the US is expected to respond to, including those that would be better handled by the appropriate social programs (but since the followers of St. Reagan slashed those, the police’s all that’s left to pick up the slack).
This is what defunding’s supposed to help with:

Royal United Services Institute has released a report examining Russian “unconventional operations” during the 2022 full scale invasion of Ukraine. Things that I found notable after skimming through the report:
  • Russian agents who infiltrated Ukraine were, among other things, tasked with getting various data, such as medical, education, police, housing, tax, finances, flight, shipping, utility bills, insurance, etc. Russians had scraped public data (like social media, or openly published government data), bought commercially available data and seized government, private and NGO data.
  • Russia has used this data to map out individuals and connections between them. Then, it has divided Ukrainians into 5 categories:
    1. High priority - to be murdered or captured for show trials
    2. Potential resistance
    3. Apathetic
    4. Collaborators (volunteers or forced)
    5. People required for running critical infrastructure
  • Quote from the report (underline is mine):
Within each town the TOG would appoint a garrison commander from the Russian military who would have an assigned detachment of garrison troops. These troops would occupy a building – usually the police or fire station – and set up facilities for detention, processing, interrogation and torture. The fact that the layout of these facilities is consistent throughout the country, and the equipment used in torture chambers, including specialised electrocution machines, were the same across multiple oblasts demonstrates that this was a systematic plan and not improvised sadism.
  • Russian FSB did not expect nor need mass collaboration; they calculated that it’s enough if 8% of population collaborates (on their own or through coercion). Ukrainian intelligence assessed that this was roughly true in areas under Russian control.
  • Russians tend to lie to their superiors that everything is going great. This means Russian services are overly optimistic, making them less effective, but also harder to deter.

This is literally the plot of Captain America Civil War.
I cannot look at that movie the same way, and now I’m terrified of Big Data.
