Honestly, I’m not trying to be biased here but I do think potential Democratic proposed 230 amendments do have have great intentions (Though it will go wrong and not go as intended despite good intentions as we saw with FOSTA 2 years ago) like stopping hate speech, disinformation, etc. However if it’s introduced by a Republican, Then we’ve got a real emergency, As the GOP likely has malicious intents to end freedom of everything online considering the president who’s currently in office.

From what I’ve seen, it’s the Democrats that want to end freedom of everything online. There was some stupid shit the GOP did as well, but ending freedom of speech is not something they run on.

Well, the GOP is honestly MUCH worse on 230, hardliners are making claims about “Anti-Conservative bias” and want the web stripped of 230 immunity because they officially say “It’s to stop their “bias”” However that’s pure bullshit because Republicans KNOW that social media dislikes Trump with a passion and the GOP’s true goal? SILENCING ALL VOICES OF DISSENT and shutting down websites they don’t like.

No different from the left wanting to shut down and censor anyone and everyone that they disagree with under many made up categories such as government defined “hate speech”. Both sides need to leave the Internet alone. This ain’t communist China, the Internet should remain fully uncensored.

It comes down to opinion there. Whatever the right may or may not want to do, the left has already been successful in silencing, censoring, and removing individuals online that disagree with their way of thinking and have repeatedly called for increases in oversight and censorship on those who they decide should be silenced for their views. This is unacceptable.

Now imagine them gaining complete control and what it would mean for the Internet. Trump is a lot of things, but he’s been POTUS for nearly 4 years and the Internet hasn’t changed much aside from what companies and corporations have chosen to do. Looking at you, YouTube.

Believe me, I know the whole “votebluenomatterwho” stick is nonsense and I have no trust of non-progressive Dems and many other people feel the same way.
 
Progressive Dems seem to respect the internet for the most part, just as much if not more than GOP members.

The US isn’t the first country to harm Encryption, Australia has already done it. So EARN It is actually pretty similar to what Australia did in 2018.

Not sure how it would be the literal doomsday of the Internet, though, even DARPA, the agency that created the Internet has voiced their concerns over certain proposed restrictive changes to the internet, and they’re not supposed to have many opinions about stuff.

So, The highly divisive EARN IT Act was just introduced aaannnnd I have mixed feelings in all honesty  
We already know it’s bipartisan and we already know it’s issues so we know what to expect, I don’t think this is quite an “Internet Ending” bill like A17 or SOPA as it doesn’t target average things like copyright, fanfics, and small sites the government doesn’t give a shit about as it’s main target is online crime. I think the best comparisons are Australia’s 2018 encryption law, Germany and France’s hate speech laws, and FOSTA/SESTA, All of which are plagued with issues.  
Plus I don’t actually hate the proposal, I do think tech companies should be held accountable for the most heinous crimes on their sites like exploitation, But the risk about encryption is the main issue that most critics of the bill have and they do have valid points like undermining encryption would cause a lot of privacy issues and possible over-censoring like what happened with FOSTA/SESTA. While it being bipartisan isn’t exactly great, It’s also not that bad of a thing as that indicates that congress is genuinely trying to do some good in my opinion, But if it were partisan, that would indicate that the proposal actually has malicious intents like censoring content said party doesn’t like, But luckily that’s not the case. Overall it’s a mixed bag but I’m not gonna panic about it unless it’s 100% necessary because I really don’t want to get involved with “moderate” Internet threats like this one as the depression I’ve had since A17 passed last year really took an emotional toll on me.
 
Update: Bill has pushback from Republicans, And some Democrats as well. This means that the bill is gonna have significant obstacles to get through.
