I think people were looking forward to Epic as a challenge to Steam until they stopped caring about being a halfway decent store and just bought exclusives, becoming part of the problem. And at least there’s GOG as well, though not as popular as Steam for reasons.
And that’s the stink right there. Steam holding an effective monopoly is bad but tolerable because they are just that good (minus a few cracks). But whenever a competitor crops up they invariably pull something shitty that kneecaps their chances at competing with Steam.
Well, GOG doesn’t. GOG is good. Needs a bigger library though.

Not like other platforms aren’t just as bad with shovelware. And it’s not Steam’s fault, no one good enough has come along to challenge them, besides maybe GoG and they barely have a library. Maybe people wouldn’t swear by steam so much if Epic came in and stole games without focusing on being a good platform first.
Also, Early Access isn’t all bad, you still get games like Valheim.
