Well, I just finished a third playthrough of New Vegas.
I still have not even made a dent in 3 or 4. I might finish 3 someday, 4 I’d like to put time into because from what I’ve seen the main quest is boring but the side stuff is worth doing. Too bad it doesn’t start for me anymore.

So, I’ve logged about 24 hours on Elden Ring now. It’s not a terrible game, but anyone saying it’s a “masterpiece” or “the greatest open world game ever made” is full of shit. I’m close to putting the game down because the frustrations outweigh the meager rewards. What are those frustrations? I’ll tell you.
The camera fights me as much as the enemies. Target lock on is atrocious. Too often my character doesn’t hit the guy right in front of him or the camera will swing around to focus on a sheep in the distance instead of the three fuckers in my face.
Sudden freezing and frame rate drops when my computer is more than strong enough to run this game smoothly.
Combat in general feels slow and clunky. I don’t understand the praise.
Armor is practically useless when every enemy hits like a truck. You either master dodging or die.
Related to the above, you can’t rely on a shield unless you pump up your stamina a lot.
Body blocking. A lanky ass zombie shouldn’t stop me like a brick wall when I’m charging him on a horse at full gallop.
Torrent dies to a stiff breeze, as I’ve complained before. When he dies, I die because it takes forever to get up after being dismounted.
The UI is not as bad as Skyrim’s, but it’s still pretty bad. You can’t equip items from your inventory page. You can’t zoom in on the map properly.
Extremely stingy with loot that’s barely worth anything anyway. Whoever farms enemies with a 4% drop chance for gear has more patience than I do.
The open world is vast but empty. There are some neat landscapes like Liurnia but I haven’t seen any towns or cities. The Lands Between don’t feel like a living world. I can’t get any sense of immersion.

I can see why Elden Ring would be a breath of fresh air to someone annoyed with other open world games that offer no serious challenge and are filled with obnoxious markers. I think Elden Ring goes too far in the opposite direction. You shouldn’t need to do research to understand the game and combat should be challenging without kicking you in the crotch for making a single mistake.

The souls series is all about slow and methodical combat, once you start an attack animation you can’t stop it so you have to think, also you can find weapons that are faster and more agile, I don’t really understand the “clunky” criticism.

The game is pretty bad with that yes.

The camera has never been a strong point for the Souls series.

The armor has been that way since DS2, so the game seems more interested in Fashion Souls.

That’s the point of stamina. You can also find bigger shields, and another thing, you might be using a shield that doesn’t have 100% physical block, and shields with lower stability are generally not worth using for blocking.
Overall it sounds more like you were expecting a different experience to the one you got.

I found a relatively fast weapon called a great epee - basically an oversized rapier. After grinding my dex to wield it, the epee was good for interrupting attacks but, as a thrusting sword, its attack angle is more narrow than that of a slashing sword. Still felt slow and clunky stabbing my way through each enemy. I’d like combat to feel more fluid, like a deadly dance.
I have a brass shield with 100% physical block. It’s not very useful when a couple attacks from regular enemies wreck my stamina. It’s honestly better to two hand a heavy weapon like a greatsword and try to take them out quick. That is, until you have to defend. Then you’re screwed unless you time your rolls perfectly. Then again, you’re screwed with a shield too, so whatever.
Overall it sounds more like you were expecting a different experience to the one you got.
Perhaps. I expected a game that would set a new standard for open world RPGs, a game that is enjoyable, rewarding, and worthy of its hype. Unfortunately, that is not what I received.

I get you, but that’s not what the Souls series has ever been about. It’s far from something like DMC or Metal Gear Rising, or even something like Witcher 3.
I don’t know much about shields in Elden Ring, in DS1 they’re very powerful and shields are generally encouraged, especially on a first run.

I don’t think it does but it’s still probably the best open world game in a while. But it’s not for everyone.
