Background Pony #04F7
Equestria and the planet where it is located are obviously, geologically speaking, enormously different from Earth, despite surface similarities. For example, the fact that fist-sized gems made of materials that would be precious in our world abound and are at least as common as coal or iron ore. They are even already cut and faceted when pulled out of the ground, unlike our world’s gems.
One of the differences is that the planet and solar system are magical creations, less than ten thousand years old. The planet is vastly more geologically active than our world (note the abundant volcanoes) and the higher concentrations of radioactive isotopes in its core mean helium is much more common. Ponies make much more use of it than humans do for lighter-than-air transport, in forms ranging from airships to small balloons.
