I know something like this would probably belong in this thread, but I thought I could make a separate thread for it. There are still people who hate Starlight Glimmer. Big surprise, right? For a while, I understood why; she had petty reasons for her descent into evil and her reformation felt rushed, and while subsequent Seasons would try to improve her character (by how much depends on who you ask) and make her better compared to how she was in Season 5, there are still people who hate/dislike her.

Now I’m not saying people are wrong for disliking her; it’s called having a personal opinion. But I’ve seen people come up with ridiculous reasons for that. One person in particular (I’m going to assume he’s not the only one with this kind of thinking) called her selfish, manipulative, irresponsible, possessive, apathetic, and even cruel (not all at once). If he was talking about Season 5 Starlight, these insults would be more justifiable, but even then apathetic or cruel is not what I would call S5 Starlight (strict maybe, but not exactly cruel). However, he’s talking about Starlight’s character from Season 6 onward. The reasons he gives are ridiculously exaggerated and I’m not the only one who thinks that as evidenced here. Don’t get me wrong, Starlight is far from perfect, it’s just that I feel people focus so much on Starlight’s flaws and downfalls (and call her a bad character) that they ignore or overlook how she improves in ANY way.

So what are your thoughts on this matter?

P.S.: I’m not calling out just Ring Team specifically, because as I mentioned before, I’m certain he’s not the only one who thinks that way
Edit: I just want to establish that this thread is made to discuss the validity of the hate towards Starlight, not rag on Ring Team. I’m just bringing him up as an example.

@Megalobronia
Yeah, I get the point, Starlight is actually a fun character, and the first step is to watch the show with open mind, some characters just isn’t worth complaining or demonize so much to the point that annoys other people.

Given “Ron the Death Eater”, if it doesn’t annoys other people, demonization can be made entertaining (see Pinkamena Cupcakes, Lil-miss Rarity, etc.) while not insulting the canon morality of the characters.

If Ring Team (and other Starlight-saltiers) continues to complain about Starlight, I’d consider them my new LOLcows.
Background Pony #6EE9
And then there is this thread by Ring Team himself:
But calm down, he admitted he likes Starlight in 3 episodes in the end, and it is kind of strange.

Everything he says to rag on her has gotten so obsessive that at this point, it feels like reading a Johnny Come Lately too unaware or stubborn to realize that hating her stopped being an interesting personality trait years ago (how interesting was that as a baseline, though?). As Dustcan said years ago, the problem is not hating Starlight; it’s being unable/unwilling to shut up about it.
Having an opinion on her nowadays, in fact, is just blasé, but holy crap, he exhibits a fundamental misunderstanding of her character. And considering his willingness to take pot shots at her fans, I don’t really trust whenever he says in that useless thread that he’s not saying they’re wrong.

My, he’s becoming a LOLcow now, and also creating new threads won’t gonna help him avoiding the ban and duck badge if it goes too far as much as spamming Starlight-hate in the Unpopular Opinions thread comments.
Northern Verve

Just a heads up, apologies for so much text from here on out but it’s a thread I though that would be perfect for sharing my perspective on Starlight. As well as share what I did to expand on her in an AU (If very canon-adjacent) ask blog just a little over a year after the show was over. I er…. also had to split this into two posts it looks like. Since it errors with the full post. Also sorry about that!
During the show’s run. I was generally lukewarm towards reformed Starlight. I was among the many who thought the reformation in Season 5 was rushed, but was hopeful Season 6 would shed some light. And that… just never materialized. I was expecting a more expanded look at Starlight’s past as naturally there wasn’t alot you could show when there was already so much going on in that time-traveling two-parter. But throughout Season 6-9. The only things we learn about Starlight’s past other then the whole “Sunburst’s leaving started her descent into evil” was who her dad was and she had a goth phase (Judging by the shape of her room in the same episode her father debuted).
I was also expecting Starlight and the CMC to share an episode together. The Trouble Shoes episode foreshadowing that the CMC could help adults who have struggled with cutie marks. The CMC getting their talents in helping others understand their marks within the same season as a villain who’s entire motivation for evil was tied to cutie marks. And in a sort of tie back to Cutie Mark Chronicles, Starlight sharing with them the story of how she got her own mark. (Which in itself is a surprise we never got to see. Not even in the IDW comics). It just seemed like exactly what Season 5 was setting up for the next season, and yet just never happened for some reason. If I had to give a guess at when she got her mark in, it was probably the first time she used the cutie mark removal spell. But either way we’ll never know for absolute sure.
So by Season 7, it was basically too late. Even if they did get into Starlight’s past in a later season it doesn’t come at the precise time they should of gotten to it. And because I lost hope that we’d ever get a real answer to remaining Post-Season 5 finale questions about her answers. I was apathetic towards most episodes (Though ironically, I differ from Ring Team that despite having been lukewarm to Starlight for so long. I kinda actually liked Every Little Thing She Does. I think it was actually No Second Prances that bothered me much more in terms of Starlight episodes from Season 6 honestly). Season 7 even drops Starlight as Twilight’s student pretty quickly, and doesn’t really give a sense of where she’s headed. She makes a few more friends (Maud for example), and the map sends her to settle a feud between Celestia and Luna. Before she’s part of the group saving the day along with the Pillars in the Season 7 finale. Before she is then employed under Twilight again in a different form through the Friendship School, starting as a Counselor and then succeeding Twilight as the Friendship School’s headmare as Twilight herself is getting a promotion of her own to succeed the royal sisters.
Being the new headmare of the Friendship School I do feel is a decent end for her character given we aren’t given enough of her to really know what they wanted to do with her. But I do feel now like the character as she was after the Season 5 finale ends up in a pretty underwhelming situation. Where at the very least they didn’t rush her into Alicorn status despite having been Twi’s student for the detractors that feared such a situation. But on the other hand. I wonder if for some Starlight fans, there’s some that feels being Headmare of the school is a bit of an underwhelming result. Given before Season 8, there was no indication that Starlight’s dream was heading a school. It could be argued that Twilight never dreamed she’d be a princess either, though at the very least that has the explanation that she HAD been training under Celestia since childhood and it had to have been for a reason. From that perspective, while Twilight certainly didn’t know Celestia was training her to eventually succeed her. It’s not something that I personally feel she’d have been totally against.
Back to Starlight though, it took until about a year after the show was over to actually really see the potential Starlight had. I run I Dream of Twilight Sparkle, a blog that’s main premise is “What if Twilight Sparkle was transformed into a genie between Seasons 2 and 3?” where most of the major events of the show still happened so I could make fun episode responses. Though it also slowly shaped into it’s own AU that while still canon-adjacent. There are noticable and even significant differences from how things happened into the show on occasion. After Season 9 was over, I eventually sought to give the I Dream of Twilight Sparkle universe it’s own answer to many of the things left open-ended after the show ended. (Example: where Spike’s egg came from, as well as why and how it was given to Twilight as a test to get into the school. Even though there’s no indication that was a normal thing since there was never any other ponies with dragon companions like Twilight) Among those many things left open, was just about everything to do with Starlight. And despite having been lukewarm to her throughout the whole show. I pulled a Thanos with a “Fine, I’ll do it myself” and expanded on her in the story. The story is 32 chapters in a script style, and not entirely focused on Starlight though she does have a big part with Chapters 5-6 and especially Chapters 25-29. It’s kind of hard to dwindle down everything I did to expand on Starlight on this already kind of long post. But in spoiler tags below I will list the major things regarding Starlight in the story.
Chapter 5
Like alot of other characters, Starlight along with Trixie and Sunburst are invited to a royal ball in Saddle Arabia by Twilight and the others. Starlight and Sunburst head back to Sire’s Hollow using portal gum that was made by Twilight’s genie powers that allows them to anywhere in the world in order to more quickly personally invite everyone they want to bring to the Royal Ball. Sunburst invites his mom, Starlight invites her dad. Though before the verbal invitation is given, Starlight finds her dad crying alone in his room. When pressed by Starlight of why he’s so down, Firelight says it’s because today happened to be the date of when Starlight’s missing mother disappeared. Adding to Starlight’s backstory, that Starlight never knew who her mother was. Because she disappeared only about 2 weeks after Starlight was born. Starlight never having been able to get her father to tell her for a reason she does not know. This leads to a tense moment where Starlight gets furious with her father that he still refuses to tell her who her mom was. She still invites him shortly after but she storms out of her house and tells Sunburst they’re heading back to her office in Ponyville.
For a while she just sits at her desk with an angry expression, not saying anything other then growling at Trixie after she talks about how wonderful Trixie’s visit was with her mother (Who in context is the same mom we saw briefly in the comics. After a tense quiet moment with Sunburst and Trixie just sitting there nervously while Starlight sits angrily, that anger eventually turns into sadness as she sobs uncontrollably into her desk. Sunburst and Trixie finally taking this moment to come close and comfort. Their conversation prods Starlight to tell what upset her so, a secret she held on to for years. Even from Sunburst and Trixie, and that being what was learned in the conversation with her father. That she never knew who her mother was.
Chapter 6
Next chapter has Trixie and Sunburst express sympathy for Starlight, with Sunburst asking some important questions even if Starlight (Such as if her parents were divorced, Starlight responding that technically her father’s still married as they never filed for divorce, and despite being missing for more then two decades. No clear sign that her mother was dead) only has vague answers. A moment later, the Cutie Mark Crusaders arrive intent on trying to invite Starlight themselves not knowing that she had already been invited by Trixie. Before they leave however, Starlight begs them to stay a little longer so she can come clean about something else: How she got her cutie mark.
She starts off telling about how she was a latchkey filly (Which is something a staff member had actually said about Starlight’s past but never actually got into the show) which means when her father was at work. She was left alone in the house, with not even a foalsitter to keep her company. As such after Sunburst left, her life was quite boring with only toys and books for anything to do while home. While playing with a ball in her home’s basement. She accidentally supercharges a ball towards a wall and it breaks. Behind this wall, were two books. The first one Starlight picked up and read, happened to be the Equality manifesto that inspired her cult later down the road. The other, was a spellbook of advanced variety. The kind of which most unicorns would not be able to perform, yet even young Starlight was able to pick up on some of the nuances of the magic. And even tried the floating herself up spell for the first time. Having fun flying in the basement. While still flying she decides to try to pick up the ball at the same time, but the reaction of the floating spell and the telekenisis all at once was too much for the filly’s horn and it started to go out of control. Her ball floating around her very fast. The orbit also attracting other objects to spin around Starlight, her eyes glowing and an aura around her very much akin to when Twilight got her mark. Her father eventually gets back home and is distressed to see the situation in the basement. He immediately tackles Starlight and bumps her horn to cut off her magic. When her father asks what happened, Starlight points to the spellbook. At first, Firelight thinks about throwing away or burning the book so Starlight never sees it again. But when he opened the front cover and noticed who it belongs to. He just couldn’t destroy it for it was one of the last reminders of… Starlight’s mother. He however does put in an effort to hide it at the very least. The dust settles, Firelight eventually noticing Starlight has gotten her cutie mark. Starlight surprised, but not exactly happy about her mark after having read the manifesto shortly before, and the intense magical situation resulting in the thing her cutie mark is in was way too vague for her to know what it meant. Firelight conflicted, but because he knew Starlight got her mark in using the spellbook. It only scared him more that Starlight was destined for a path he didn’t want her to follow. So despite the sheer negative impact of the decision not to tell her what her mark may mean. That’s where things stood afterward for a while.
The CMC go into a huddle after hearing Starlight’s story. Eventually deducing that Starlight may have inherited her raw magic power from someone in her family. Starlight thinking that makes sense, though she knows her father’s line is pretty average. Before she facedesks when she realizes this probably ties into whoever is her missing mom. The CMC’s interaction with Starlight only providing clues to who her mom is. But not answering everything just yet.
Chapter 13 and 17
Later, at the Royal Ball. Sunburst makes Starlight realize she could of just wished for Twilight to help find out who her mom was. But she’ll wait until the morning after the royal ball, so she doesn’t have ponies wrapped up in her family drama when everyone’s here just to have a good time at the ball. There’s a scene during the ball where she goes to see Applejack alone at a table. They both looking at a table that has all the living mothers of the Elements of Harmony plus a few more. AJ a bit envious because of course her own mom is deceased, and Starlight feeling a little similarly with her not knowing anything. They bond over a similar circumstance between eachother, with Starlight even asking for AJ to tell her some stories at the very end of Chapter 17
Northern Verve

Chapter 25
Moving ahead to Chapter 25. Is when Twilight and the others seek to meet Starlight when Applejack informs Twilight about Starlight’s situation at the 2nd of Chapter 24. Eventually they meet at the Rock farm, where Starlight came screaming to see Applejack after seeing… the spirits of her parents. But to Starlight’s surprise. The others already knew, because Twilight and Spike have already been using a newly discovered ability of the magical tear-drop shaped gem on Spike’s necklace that he had gotten at the end of another story that took place between Seasons 4 and 5 that allowed them to summon and talk to spirits of the deceased as long as someone touching the dragon’s tear is blood related or was a friend of them when they were alive. By this point they had already summoned Spike’s dragon mother, the first ever genie, and Applejack’s parents. The very spirits that Starlight herself saw. Getting into everything else revealed along side the spirits will already make this very long post even longer to explain everything. But I can elaborate in another post if necessary. They tell Starlight everything they have learned about spirit summoning before finally heading out to help Starlight find her mother. Starlight coming clean to Twilight that part of the reason she so quickly turned around at the end in the events depicted in the Season 5 finale. Is in the moment Twilight was softly talking her down, it felt like the closest Starlight had to a mother figure. Coincidentally, with Spike on Twilight’s back (In the Genie Twilight universe, Twilight and Spike had adopted eachother as mother and son a year after she became a genie)
They head to Sire’s Hollow, Starlight going in and dragging her father out of the house so he can be there for whatever results in finding her mother. First, Starlight tries wishing from Twilight to know where her mother is on the planet. The wish however fails, with Twilight fearing that this very likely means that Starlight’s mother is deceased. Firelight however is in extreme denial, he doesn’t want to believe that she’s dead despite it having been so long since he last saw her. But knowing he’s entrapped, especially with the gem on Spike’s neck newfound spirit summoning ability. The truth was finally going to come out. The spirit is summoned, and Starlight’s mother turns out to be the spirit of I Dream of Twilight Sparkle’s Sunset Shimmer (In case you have any objections, Equestria Girls wasn’t canon to IDOTS. And this Sunset is much older then the one we saw in the series, although she did die young. So she still looks at around the same age of the Mane 6 because she was their age when she died)
Chapter 26
This incarnation of Sunset was never a villain, in fact she was actually quite steadfastly loyal to Princess Celestia. She was very magically gifted, her raw power as a filly more impressive then Twilight’s was at that age. She loved being Equestria’s premier hero in her teenage days, keeping track of all threats to Equestria and saving the day constantly. Overtime however, the constant pursuit of criminals wore on her. Though it wasn’t Celestia ordering her to deal with the threats, it was Sunset herself who made it her prerogative. Eventually at some point, she decided to step down as Celestia’s protege. At the time of her stepping down she had been married to Firelight for a few years and was now pregnant with a foal. She believed that for the most part, Equestria would be fine for until Celestia would find her next pupil. However, shortly after her foal (Who was natually, Starlight) was born. She went after one more remaining threat to Equestria. An evil family of 3 ponies that seeked to take or destroy the magic of Equestria. It is on said mission that Sunset went missing.
Firelight comes clean to Starlight that the reason he never told her about Sunset, was he feared one day that Starlight would disappear too, just like Sunset did cause he knew Starlight might of likely wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Especially after using what would turn out to be… her mother’s spellbook when she got her Cutie mark. On a side note, Sunset doesn’t immediately tell everything that happened because despite being a spirit. She’s having trouble recalling her memories with vague information about who the 3 she chased after were. But bit by bit the conversation with her reveals more.
Chapter 27
Chapter 27 has the spirit of Sunset, Sunburst, and Stellar Flare go see Sunspot’s father. Back in Chapter 6, Sunburst mentioned to Starlight that his father’s not been around much for a while. The reason for that being that Sunspot has been looking for his long lost younger sister for any sign of where she could of gone. Said younger sister… having also been Sunset. Meaning in the IDOTS universe. Sunburst and Starlight have been cousins the entire time (Apologies in advance to StarBurst shippers BTW). They found Sunburst’s Father in a place pretty close to where Sunset died. Nightmare Cliffs. The mere mention of Nightmare Cliffs actually jogs more memory on Sunset’s spirit. Sunburst’s father is noticably sad that his sister has been dead the entire time. But at the same reacts as if he knew it, because he had actually found something of a major clue. A gold-yellow unicorn horn detached from a body that he placed in a jar. Said jar jogging Sunset’s memory further, now remembering that during the moment of her death. Her horn got broken by a rock that was dropped by someone.
Chapter 28
The next chapter, Sunburst’s father and the group that went to see him return to the house in Sire’s Hollow sharing to Twilight and the others what they learned to unravel the mysteries of what happened to Sunset. In the meantime, Sunset asks Twilight for a recap of all the villains she’s faced ever since becoming Celestia’s student. As Sunset had kept her eye on enough potential threats as to be aware of most of what Twilight’s had to deal with. When they get to mentioning that Starlight was one of those. She at first sighs but understands the cult thing since it was her who left that manifesto in the house. She tried to hide it, but it was the lone copy she kept in order to have a sort of historical record of what to watch for. Any other copies of that book she had burned. but when the subject turns to Starlight’s time traveling. That’s when things get heated. Sunset telling her straight that if she had seen her own daughter do such a thing. She’d only have two choices, either put her own daughter frozen in a statue. Or imprisoned in Tartaurus. Starlight then tells pretty much her life’s story. And how it all stemmed from the fact Sunset was not around. For without Sunset, Starlight did not have the mother figure in her life to help tell her right from wrong (And with Sunset having been the hero she was, there’s every indication she would have been able to raise Starlight better then Firelight did on his lonesome). Seeing how regretful Starlight was of her past, and her lying on the floor in tears gets Sunset to reconsider her disappointment in Starlight having done time traveling spells. And comforts her daughter in tears, singing a different rendition of My Past Is Not Today (Only it’s Your Past Is Not Today when Sunset is singing, though it’s also something of a duet. Where Starlight’s verse is My Past Is Not Today). Before ending off Chapter 28, Sunset assures Starlight that while the situation of her past may not completely balance off what she did, she understands how her untimely death impacted Starlight’s life along with everything else in her life that conspired to make it feel like she had to do things such as the Our Town Cult. Sunset still tells Starlight that she loves her, and would of been there for her had her unfortunate death hadn’t happened.
Chapter 29
Chapter 29 finally gets into just what happened. The recap of the villains Twilight faced continued eventually reaching the final one: Cozy Glow. The mere mentioning of Cozy floods just about all the memories Sunset had left unlocked. As it turned out, the family of 3 that Sunset were chasing was Cozy and her parents. Cozy’s parent’s names being Cheque Mace and Glitterani, who had King and Queen chess pieces as their cutie marks. They were some of the most narcissistic psychopathic ponies to ever exist, and those traits also applied to Cozy. There was no method that would work to reform those 3 (Admittedly yes, this is a bit of a Ron the Death Eater on Cozy herself. But we knew less about Cozy’s backstory more then we did of Starlight. Plus Cozy never really seemed to regret her actions unlike Starlight). When Sunset went to deal with the three, she’s at first fooled by Cozy’s manipulation into thinking maybe she is different from her parents. But upon a situation where she’s winning a fight against Cozy’s parents. With Cozy’s father having been blasted off the cliff. And Glitterani’s wing injured, Sunset doesn’t realize that up in the air is Cozy carrying a large rock. And before she realizes it, the large rock is dropped on the base of Sunset’s horn. Cracking it, and giving Sunset a temporary concussion. Sunset manages to shortly get back up, when she looks up. She sees a psychopathically laughing child laughing at her misery. It being Cozy, revealing that Cozy was indeed just as evil as her parents. Sunset tries blasting something at Cozy despite her broken horn, and previously in the story it was established that usually a broken horn especially in powerful unicorns can cause random effects. The said random effect that gets Cozy just so happens to be a time travel dome that sends her to about the time of the beginning or early parts of Season 8 chronologically in the timeline. With only Cozy’s mother and Sunset left. In anger of likely the death of her husband and no idea what just happened to Cozy. Glitterani grabs onto Sunset and hurls them both off the cliff into certain death. Sunset trying one last desperation move to save herself. Cozy’s mother puts a hoof on the hole of Sunset’s broken horn. Pressure building in Sunset’s head until a large magic explosion just above the water envelops them both. Any remains of either mare dropped into the ocean and/or eaten by hungry sharks.
Now that it is known what happened, this bubbles up anger quickly in Starlight. She uses another portal gum to the location of Cozy’s statue and tries to blast it to smithereens. Twilight stepping in front to stop her. The context of this is that while most of the dead end up in a soul shield around the planet. Those were died evil end up as dark magic that damages the planet, killing Cozy most certainly resulting in some consequence for Ponyville. Starlight is so enraged that it was Cozy’s fault her early life was so awful, she pleads with Twilight and her mother that they’ll be able to beat back the consequences in time. Just like how the Windigoes (Which was noted earlier in the story as the most notable example of deceased evil ravaging the planet). But Twilight and Sunset manage to calm Starlight down and stop her from destroying the Cozy statue. From there, things get back into a happy place. And Starlight and Sunburst decide to stay in Sire’s Hollow for a little longer so spend time with Sunset while she’s still down there. The mysteries of Starlight’s life mostly solved with mostly the only thing left is what Starlight’s going to do with this information now that she knows.
Epilogue
This is answered in the epilogue of the story. Where having had some time to think about it. She is the daughter of the only other pony to catch Celestia’s attention. Plus, she had inherited said pony’s magic power, having gotten her mark using their spellbook. She now believes that this means she was destined to follow in her mother’s footsteps. And considers asking Twilight if she could be her student once more. After the wedding of Twi’s Saddle Arabian friends were over. Starlight’s goal now either being Twilight’s ace for the rest of her life, or even… Twilight’s co-ruler. As the new younger (albeit adoptive) sister of the new royal duo with the void of Luna also retiring alongside Celestia. (After the story there’s comics where she does ask and Twilight does agree, although Twilight’s still giving some time left for Starlight to earn her sisterhood/wings later). Considering I feared Starlight was going to be rushed into an Alicorn without ever going further into her backstory, this is something of a 180 for me where I actually wrote her back into that situation where her ascending might be inevitable at some point. Though I hope I at least managed something of a decent explanation for it for this universe’s Starlight. Most of the story I don’t consider canon of course, and I shouldn’t be accused of thinking so more then I think Twilight is a genie in canon
Writing said story managed to actually make me realize Starlight was perhaps one of, if not the show’s biggest missed opportunity. The way the show could of have expended on her of course could of gone on the same cores of what I did to expand on her in the story but in a different direction. Even Ring Team’s thing fixated on Starlight’s mother too, although in Ring Team’s case for their thread. The hypothetical mother was far from a good one, where as I went with a missing And turned out to be deceased before Starlight could pick up any memory of what she looked like good mother instead in the story. Other things such as whether or not if Firelight knew about Starlight’s evil deeds, and having some connection with other bad guys other then her rivalry with Chrysalis. At the very least, the show probably should of gotten to show how Starlight got her cutie mark as a startoff point even if nothing else is covered. Just knowing that alone may have gotten into subjects that would of helped endear her quicker in Season 6.
Sorry for the long post, but I thought this thread was perfect to give out my own perspective as well a s potential way to wrap-up what Starlight could have been. Obviously, for alot of reasons what I did to expand on Starlight couldn’t have happened in canon Especially Sunset being her mom. For Hasbro getting phone calls about indirectly promoting teen pregnancy reasons. (In case you see this spoiler without everything else again, Equestria Girls is not canon to I Dream of Twilight Sparkle. And this Sunset in context is older then EQG Sunset. I would be just in interesting in hearing other interpretations as I really do view Starlight now as an interesting character. It’s just the show never bothered to milk any of the potential she could of had. I praise anyone who could call themselves a Starlight fan during the show honestly, they must of saw things that I just couldn’t for a long while. I’m making up for lost time though in appreciating Starlight’s character though, she has a pretty major role in some things I have planned for the future. And while G5 is going on, Starlight’s character is going to be one thing that those who still want to talk about G4 more should discuss at length. As even if G5 gets into returning the Mane 6 (Or at least only Twilight) through a limbo or other situation. Starlight’s going to feel like a footnote in G5 probably. For fans who want to keep her alive in some way. Discussions about her is all she may have left alongside fan art and fan fictions.
I didn’t really hate Starlight during the show’s run, but it was hard to necessarily say I liked her either. But now I can say I do like her, but in a sense that there was so much they could of done with her that they just didn’t. But at the very least, I enjoyed expanding on her myself. So in a weird twisted way I guess I should be grateful they didn’t expand on Starlight in the show cause then what I did for her wouldn’t have gotten me to write her part of the story. But this is certainly a big change for me in just a year ago I was still among those lukewarm to her. And now I kinda consider myself a Starlight fan in some fashion at least. I have so much I want to do or see with her now in terms of fanon stuff. The old me would of been bewildered that I was doing this much with Starlight, heh heh.

I just want to re-establish that this thread is made to discuss the validity of the hate towards Starlight, not rag on Ring Team. I’m just bringing him up as an example. (I’m repeating this for emphasis)

I’d say Derpyfast’s takes on her are easily among the best and most well-thought out. He never goes into Death Eater exaggeration and stays objective, whether speaking positively or negatively. And he can tell when either side is being overblown.

My reasonings for not being a big fan of starlight even tho I do quite like her and it for the most part doesn’t have to do with morally as shes a very good pony infact its kinda the problem more on that later. I found her to be a overrated character. She herself has a lot of flaws as a written character but is praised as the second coming of Zuko.
A character like starlight i feel would be chewed up and spitted out in a lot of other fandoms for how shes written. Starlight changes wayyyyyyy too goddamn fast from a cult leader to a teacher of a school. To bring up the ron the death eater thing, she never ever suffered karma for being dictator and destroying multiple universes. Its not realistic especially for someone who became a dictator because one friend left to be as nice as she is that fast.
I much much prefer characters like discord who struggle every step of the way to become better, something i also relate to cause its hard improving and i feel like outside of the hardcore brony fandom that’s agreed upon as those who watch mlp but aren’t hardcore bronies love discord as a character besides the finale which almost everyone seems to hate sadly lol :(. But there are some things i like about starlight like how her relationship with trixie develops even to point of ship. Shes likeable in the basic sense personality wise most of time. Overall I feel like she has too many issues as a character and can honestly be replaced in the role she has as a reformed character but again i don’t hate just wish she would be called out to.@Megalobronia

Thank you I very much appreciate it. It can be easy to forget that this show and fandom is supposed to be about kindness because things can get pretty vindictive admittedly im part of the problem but im trying to be better and look at other sides. U seem to be nice from what ive seen.

Treated like the 2nd coming of Zuko? No. No such thing ever became widespread, if it ever even happened. Chewing up and spitting out in large factions within this fandom, on the other hand- the hate was vocal and was one of the most enduring MLP controversies. Ring Team is just joining the bandwagon long after it fell out of vogue to fixate.

I’m afraid I am not as kind as Megalobronia, I am far more merciless, I might have to avoid or ignore some haters at times.
