Tag description suggestions

Welcome to the wonderful world of tag descriptions, aka, those little blocks of text that describe a tag and potentially show an example image. For one example, let’s look at the pony tag.

The Short Description gives a one sentence summary that defines the tag cleanly, this can be seen upon hovering over the tag on an image.

The Long Description gives details on the definition of the tag, how it is used, where it should not be used, and if applicable, an example image or multiple.

Lots of tags that should have descriptions do not. Since only staff can add them, and since we only have so much time to do this, this thread is for anyone to contribute and make descriptions for any tags they want. Staff can then look over them and add them or reject them as we see fit. Please spoiler any NSFW tags and keep any example images to suggestive rating at max. Not every tag needs an example image so don’t add one unless it really helps with visuals. Limit yourself to one example image unless you really think it needs multiple. Pick example images based on what fits the tag the most, not what image you like the best.

Here is an example on how to format your suggestion.

Please make your tag description as simple to understand as possible: remember, less is more! Keep it straight to the point and don’t add extra fluff and opinions into it. Nobody wants to hear about how much you think Kirins are smelly or that artist:ponyfan77 draws a lot of giant wings and you think they need to stop, just focus on describing a tag in a way that everyone can understand. Staff can and will edit your wording if it has mistakes or improper grammar.

Don’t hesitate to help each other out or suggest a tag you think needs something but you have no idea how to word it yourself. You can also suggest updates for existing tags with descriptions if you find they can be refined!

NOTE: This is NOT for OC tag descriptions, those are handled in HERE. If you put one of these in here, it will be ignored and/or deleted.

Tag name: sketch Link
Short Description: A simply or hastily executed drawing or painting.

Long Description: A simply or hastily executed drawing or painting, especially a preliminary one, giving the essential features (of an object or scene) without the details. Often monochrome and has a leftover draft lines. For a multiple sketched characters or objects in one image add the sketch dump.

Note: I used a Kernerman Webster’s College Dictionary definition of a term salted a bit with Merriam-Webster’s (part in the brackets). May there be any copyright issues?
Also I’m not sure about the definition of draft lines (those appearing while approximating to the final lines. Head circles, etc.)

Next time I’ll try to draw the line between this tag and a lineart.

Tag name: lineart Link
Short Description: Image consisting of distinct lines.
Long Description: Usually monochrome image that consists of distinct lines on a usually simple background, without gradations in shade (darkness) or hue (color). Can use dots (stippling) or hatching for shading simulation, lines of different colors, areas of solid color. Form and outline are emphasized over color, shading, and texture.

Notes: I used a Wiki article on “Line art” (an old revision because the latest one lacks a chunk of text).
Out of the 2.5k-ish pictures tagged ‘lineart’ I managed to page through I see not a little amount of those falling out of the strict definition of a term into something more like the ‘sketch’ or just ‘traditional art’.

Reasoning: Not to imply that there must be multiple different characters or objects on the picture. Sorry I glanced over this with my sleepy eye yesterday.

Could link hatching to hatching (technique) and add mention of halftone (which is used way more than stippling), otherwise it looks good.

Tag name: emanata Link
Short Description: Graphic signs depicting emotion, motion or sound.
Long Description: Various graphic signs (dots, lines, exclamation marks, drops etc.) used to convey information that goes beyond what could be perceived visually. Usually “emanate” from the head or body of a character or from an object. Can suggest psychological or emotional states, sounds, smells, physical impact, etc.

Notes: Adapted the formulation of a term from The List of Terms for Comics Studies with the help of a snippets from various other sources (see below).
I think this here adaptation looks a bit broader than the Derpibooru’s understanding of the term, but the term itself really is even more broad. What I managed to gather on the definition, with sources (Pastebin).

Tag name: self paradox Link
Short Description: Two or more versions of the same character of the same species interacting on the image.
Long Description: Copies as well as different age, gender (see r63 paradox), status, role model, mental state, universe, timeline, etc., usually placed in one point of a space-time continuum. If it’s pony, add self ponidox, if human, add human paradox. For the other species see the list of ‘self *doxes’.

Notes: Derived the meaning more from the earlier use cases of the tag where the characters were the same species and at least looked at each other.
! Still I think it needs more thought into it because of how all this ‘-doxes’ interconnect. _{And I need more sleep.}

Tag name: pictogram Link
Short Description: A character or graphic symbol representing a word, phrase, or idea.
Long Description: Communicating without words. Saying “I love you” with a heart, “no” with an X, confirming with a tickmark or asking about something with the image of that thing. See also spoken heart.

Notes: Strictly speaking, most of the images tagged ‘pictogram’ actually contain an ideogram. But the ship has sailed long ago so I here stuck to the established conception and blurred a line between both too.

Tag name: self paradox Link
Question: So now it is an encompassing tag with ‘self ponidox’, ‘human paradox’, ‘human ponidox’ and similar being a subsets of it? If so that’s gonna be a lot of tagwork because there’s 8.4k+ images under the ‘self ponidox’ tag and only 1.3k+ under the ‘self paradox’ tag.
At least, maybe the example images should be changed for a more species-diverse ones?

Yes, that’s what its always been. I’ll go through and set implications on all the paradox subtags to fix future cases but anything before now will have to be mass-tagged at some point.

Tag name: awesome face Link
Short description: A specific icon with a big smile.
Long description: A specific icon featuring a big open-mouthed smile and an eye roll, or characters with an expression greatly resembling that icon. For the expression Rainbow Dash made while saying the line “so awesome”, use the tag dashface instead. Do not use this tag just for faces you think are of high quality.

Tag name: lens flare Link
Short Description: Optical artifact: several starbursts, rings, or circles in a row across the image.
Long Description: Several starbursts, rings, or circles in a row across the image lining up from the very bright light source such as the sun. Can also take the form of a horizontal lines from the light source. Happens when light is scattered or flared in a lens system as in cameras. As an effect it is applied to digital art for an added sense of realism.

Short Description: The character is being viewed from the rear.
Reasoning: So it can be seen by hovering over the tag too. The more ways to remind a user, the better. Especially with this tag and ‘from behind’.

Short Description: Black bars above and below the image.
Long Description: Originally, it is the practice of transferring film shot in a widescreen aspect ratio to standard-width video formats while preserving the film’s original aspect ratio. Can be deliberately used on a still images for a cinematic look.

Tag name: screencap reference Link
Short description: A screencap is in the image, but it is not the main content.
Long description: An unedited screencap or other official media is present in the image, but it is not the main content. It might be included for comparison to a drawing, or because the artist used it for reference while drawing. Whether or not the image is a scene interpretation depends on the content.

Tag name: timberling Link

Short Description: A hybrid that is part changeling and part timber pony.

Long Description: A species, Mihay came up with, while pondering about merging two of his favorite species. Timberlings are changelings, who have infected themself with the timber virus, having the timber infection grow over their body until a certain point. They can still morph, but the timber parts remain on the transformation. (Example: Twilight morph = Timber pony Twilight)
