You guys act as if “ascended memes” aren’t a common thing. Even MLP:FiM is guilty of referencing popular fan memes, and such.
I think even the Simpsons has referenced memes before, like “Snape kills Dumbledore.” It may seem cheap/pandering nowadays, but I guess it’s no different then how old cartoons used to reference pop-culture things like “Kilroy was here.” (Which was a meme before internet memes existed.)
@Red-Supernova
I think it was a season or two ago actually.
As for the Phil Collins thing, supposedly, they were. They stated they were actually prepared to lose the award, but they “weren’t prepared to lose to Phil Collins,” so they really don’t like him and/or his music apparently.
Their parody of Phil Collins was kinda a shallow parody honestly, basically just portraying him as another “dumb-sounding jerk,” whom creates problems in the episode, and sings a parody version of “You’ll be in my heart” (From Tarzan) that tries to make the song sound terrible.
My ex-girlfriend was a huuuge Phil Collins fan, so she really hated South Park for that.
