Admittedly, it has been a few months since I caught myself up with the anime but I don’t believe I posted anything on it here. If I am mistaken, my apologies, but I just want to say some things about the Saga of Tanya the Evil (Youjo Senki). This being an anime I checked out because of Arkada’s words from Glass Reflections.
Which to quote and somewhat paraphrase part of their video:
Where the anime follows “the story of this prodigy tactician of a little girl. Where she takes the absurd orders from her superiors and using skill, and sometimes pure rage, she pulls victories out of her arse like nobody’s business and is single handedly helping her country of (not) Germany win the war against the (not) Allied Powers.
Except her character not a demon loli out for blood but rather (Spoiler revealed in the second episode) reincarnated middle aged Japanese businessman who picked a fight with God at the moment of his death and got tossed into the body of a little girl in an alternate timeline for his trouble. This being where the series gets interesting, as watching a series about a little girl fighting a war is fun and all… but this alone will not keep me invested in the series. That said, watching a series about a disgruntled Japanese man in the body of a little girl while he has a pissing match with God was some of the best entertainment of the year so far.
Because of this review, despite Arkada’s disappointment in the anime not being as historically accurate as he’s like though being an alternate historical setting with magic thus understandable differences, I watched the series myself and found it to be brilliant. An interesting and enjoyable watch, which I was disappointed when I ran out of episodes to view.
Chuckles, this in spite of the fact the main character being atheist with a being calling himself God screwing with her. In trying to her get to give in and admit that she needs him, that she can’t simply do everything by herself. An important detail since I myself am Christian and believe in a God who isn’t an asshole or one who likes screwing with people. Also, in how the series very much as shades of grey in who war when I generally prefer things a bit more straightforward on who one should route for.
As such, there is perhaps a certain irony or confusion on why I would like this anime. Shrugs
