I don’t know where else to post this, so I’ll put it here. I’d really like an explanation from a variety of people on what the big deal with cell phones is. TV keeps telling me not only do I need one, but it already assumes I have one and need a NEW, BETTER one. There’s this whole culture around them that I just don’t understand, and I’d like people to help me understand it.

Particularly for a smartphone, being useful and convenient is definitely a plus. Its got a lot of functions of other things smashed into one and you can carry it in your pocket. Pretty much everything else stems from that.

People just take their convenience for granted and don’t mind spending the equivalent of half a month of meals every couple of years on product disposable and planned to be obsolete by design.

I don’t get it either. Never did, even when cell phones were just ‘that thing teenagers in cartoons have’ in the early 00s. I spent my life without a recreational cell phone, and I only just got an old smartphone this year from my BF just to use for google hangouts calls and music. I can’t STAND how touchscreens feel on my fingers and I don’t like using them, and I hate how many games (actual fucking games too) end up on them and not on actual gaming devices or PCs. I have a computer, I have a couple, I even have a tablet (also not brand new nor my own technically) and I still don’t get it. I’ve never been one to text or call people when I have a fucking laptop that can do all that and more, and has a bigger screen, fucking physical keys/buttons, and a mouse. And I don’t have to rub my hands all over the screen to use it.
 
I’ve lived this long without NEEDING a smartphone, and the fact that so many things require one is infuriating. Fuck mobile gaming, honestly. Keep that limited to simple shit, and put actual IPs on actual consoles or computers. Why the fuck anyone would play Sonic 2 on a smartphone is beyond me.
 
…Yeah, I have a bit of a grudge against smartphones and cell phones in general. Helps that when I was younger, I was socially inept to the point of disinterest.

Having portable access to the greatest repository of knowledge ever assembled is definitely helpful, even if you just use it to save money with a coupon like I did today.
 
There is an incredible amount of utility packaged into a smartphone.
 
What I don’t understand is the people who spend all their time texting or walk around stores talking with somebody about what they’re going to buy. Who the hell cares what kind of toothpaste you’re buying? Get a life.
 
I don’t like touchscreens in general. They have no tactile feedback, the buttons are too small for my fingers, and often there is just enough delay processing inputs that it screws up. I see people texting with both thumbs and I don’t know how they do it. Give me a physical keyboard and I’m fine, but with a touchscreen keyboard I’m relegated to hunt and peck.
 
It’s particularly annoying then how automakers are moving to touchscreens in cars. Look at something like a Volvo or a Tesla where all interaction with the car is done via the touchscreen. How am I supposed to safely take my eyes off the road to look at the touchscreen (I have to look because no tactile feedback) when I’m going 70 mph on a busy highway? They want me to buy more shitty technology to save me from the problem they created. I’ll stick with what works.

Mike buttons on keyboards were a giant mistake.
 
especially if they still beep loudly despite being on silent mode.
