I’ve noticed that a lot of sitcoms will start out with well-rounded characters, but then will do the opposite of character development and flanderize them until one or two of their traits become their entire personality. I think part of the deal is that sitcom writers in particular have less of a pressure to take on good character development and are more focused on simply making sure things are funny, so giving characters limited traits (or significantly limiting their traits over time) is a lazy way to add more potential for comedy.
Unfortunately, this can often lead to characters becoming more of horrible jerks as opposed to people we’d identify with IRL.
