What They Say: I hate TBBT because all they do is mock nerd stereotypes!
What They Mean: I’ve never actually seen TBBT because I have no idea that they dropped that shtick after one season and I’m just repeating other people’s eight year old complaints.
Anonymous asked:
What do you think about the argument that the electoral college is necessary to keep big cities from deciding elections?
lily-peet answered:
Of course big cities decide elections. That’s where people live. Why should someone have their voting power lessened just because they live around a lot of other people?
That attitude comes from the obsolete idea that individual states are their own mini countries and that your government is being decided in some entirely different land. They’re not. The electoral college being removed doesn’t mean cities decide everything. Everybody gets one vote, dipshit. That’s how it works.
Additionally, the electoral college only applies to the President. The Senate and House of Representatives are voted by individual districts. So the part of the government that matters isn’t even decided by the electoral college. The figurehead does.
Here’s a crazy idea: What if instead of electing the President directly, the party that gets the most elected representatives automatically has their nominee become President? This means you have to pay more attention to who your representative is as that’s who you’re voting for, and it means the current Presidential campaign of “Overwhelm the people with made up scandals” stops being relevant and people have a harder time voting based on their personal feelings about how spoopy the nominee is and you end up focusing on the part of your government that actually matters.
I mean, it’s not like that weird, off the wall system is practiced by every other democratic nation on the fucking planet.
Oh wait…

Peet really has no fucking clue why the Electoral college is needed, and it’s funny how she says it’s bad when it literally gives a voice to the minorities (in this case the lesser populated areas).

If we had no electoral college, then basically California and New York (and other large population states) would decide our presidency. Fuck all the other states and their needs.

Everybody gets one vote, dipshit. That’s how it works.

WRONG! THE UNITED STATES IS NOT A DEMOCRACY! IT’S A REPRESENTATIVE REPUBLIC! This isn’t ancient Athens Peet you retard.

I can’t respond to the other stuff because I’m not educated enough on the political processes, but JFC Peet study up on things you don’t actually know.

True democracy is mob rule. And if you are so scared of “dem white republicans” then you’ll want the electoral college to prevent that shit.

Can someone like Mister Metokur or Blaire White please just call Peet out on her bullshit already? Peet will probably just try to save face so hard it’ll create a loop of more people calling her out.

I wasn’t trying to hurt or help what she was trying to say, merely pointing out there are problems with the electoral college.

Personally I still don’t agree with the majority of what comes out of her mouth, but I just wanted to point out that the electoral college isn’t as good as a lot of people think it is.

But it is better than having a system where every vote counts as it will screw over rual and low population areas and have areas with high population deciding everything. It should be reformed instead of being abolished.

@Derped
Watch the video, it explains everything. With the current system, not only is there only a handful of states that make any difference whatsoever to the elections but the way the electorial votes are decided is actually rigged given how State boundaries can be set up.

The video lays out all the facts and provides references.

Actually better yet, look up the full episode Adam Ruins Voting as that goes into much more detail than what I linked.

Except the answer isn’t to abolish the electoral college altogether. Because if that system was replaced with the popular vote deciding who gets elected president, then the US would no longer be the representative federal republic that it had been founded as. So really, I’m actually unsure if you along with Adam understand that the United States was never established as a true democracy.

@William Brady
You missed my point completely. My point was that having the president be decided by popular vote wouldn’t go against the representative federal republic idea. And besides, why would you preserve unfairness just for the sake of keeping the government system exactly the same? If something doesn’t work, shouldn’t we change it?
William Brady

@Ihhh

However, the answer to the whole issue is not to abolish the electoral college outright. Of course it’s also worth noting, that folks like Peet, and you as well presumably, would’ve had no issue with it if Hillary Clinton were to have won the presidency instead of Trump.
