As of last year, The US Army was in the process of putting together a program to widely distribute electronic hearing protection devices known as “Tactical Communication And Protective System”– which function as Bluetooth-type communicators and allow normal hearing until sudden loud noises cause them to act as ear plugs– but as far as I know, at the moment only The Kings Of The Battlefield and aircraft carrier deck crews are specifically (officially) issued ear pro (at least in addition to headsets, like aircrew and Armor crews, etc., which seal out enough ambient noise to count); a huuuge number of combat personnel just provide their own ear pro, especially off-the-shelf commercial electronics that already do what TCAPS does. I don’t think the ones you can get at hunting supply shops are even on the list of devices prohibited by ITAR or USML so they can be mailed to servicemembers by APO or FPO– but I’d want to check first before filling an envelope. Those who don’t have that sort of fancyness tend to just suck it up and take the damage so that they can still hear orders and firefight communication without ear plugs getting in the way; hearing loss and tinnitus are actually the two most common injuries treated by the Veterans’ Administration– even moreso than PTSD– and account for over a billion dollars worth of treatment every year.

average infantry engagement range
It varied widely depending on who you asked, but <200yds was pretty consistent for the US Army and USMC. One of my great uncles and a family friend from the same unit said they usually made contact at around 100yds in France and Germany; another great uncle said he almost never used the sights on his M1 carbine on Iwo Jima because the Japanese soldiers he encountered were all at fistfight range, and artillery or airstrikes took care of any further away than that.

I was gonna say, the average infantry engagement range in WWII was, what, 75 yards? And after shooting 30-06 rifles and machine guns without hearing protection, they probably wouldn’t have been able to hear much of anything.

Actually, do they even give ear pro to anyone but artillery guys, even today?

and the enemy would know they were out of ammo and would rush their position

Ah, one of the most enduring myths of the Garand; there was never any documented instance of this sort of thing actually happening in combat that wasn’t more easily explained by the simple fact that if you’re in a situation where the enemy is attempting to overrun your position, the enemy is attempting to overrun your position, and sooner or later they’re going to do that while you happen to be relaoding. In actual practice, volley fire went out with the rifled musket, and a situation where every rifleman in a unit was reloading at the same time would have been so rare that one of them might have accidentally shot a unicorn. Also in actual practice, anyone who’s ever been in a for-realz firefight can tell you that you very quickly lose the ability to hear the mechanical functions of your own weapon, much less pinging sounds from an opponent’s weapon that’s any further away than bayonet distance; even if you’re fortunate enough not to feel the tender loving caress of artillery fire, full sized rifle cartridges are loud as fsck, and most combat veterans– especially in an era before electronic hearing protection– came home with significant hearing loss. The en bloc usually does *PING!* when it ejects, but that’s not a sound that carries any great distance, especially when everyone else around you is hurling 30 caliber thunderbolts in both directions.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

One thing I like about the Garand is in WW1 when the ammo clip would empty and be ejected it made a distinct ping sound and the enemy would know they were out of ammo and would rush their position or pop up and take shots at them this was remedied by taking their bayonets and dropping the tips onto a rock to simulate the sound of a clip ejecting and when the enemy would pop up they’d shoot them.

One of the very few guns where ‘clip’ is the right word….

The Garand has a fixed internal magazine, it cannot be removed and when you dismantle the gun you take the magazine apart so it cannot exist as a separate entity. The ammunition is placed into the gun by means of an en-bloc clip, a fancy fold of metal the clips 8 cartridges together. You put the en-bloc clip and the 8 rounds into the magazine, and then the gun can function.

Oh man I’m so bored of explaining this >.<

I forgot that clips didn’t refer to individual rounds.

@Pagan
I remember hearing somewhere else that they would hit empty clips against their helmets.

/k/ommando Anon and Lyra chatting online

Anon bragging about how awesome it is to operate firearms using hands

Lyra being jealous

Anon: >You will never get Garand Thumb

Lyra: (Navy Seal copypasta)

Anon: lol whatever

Minutes later the door to Anon’s room bursts open

Lyra stares at Anon and he stares back with a look of fear in his eyes

Lyra: I’ll give you a headstart, I suggest you get out.

Anon doesn’t move, he’s as stiff as a board.

Lyra levitates an M1 Garand and a magazine that was in the hallway

Lyra: No seriously; get the fuck out.
