As for the lack of oil hammers and row-your-owns here in the Colonies, Americans equate diesels with lots of black smoke, horrible noise and smell so bad you can taste it. You can thank our big rigs lorries for that. Also, General Motors made a right hash of things by building some of the shittiest diesels in all of internal combustion history. The stupid morons started with gas engine blocks and modified them for diesel use. That went over so badly, some folks converted them back to gas! Then GM bought a stake in Isuzu, so this debacle would never happen again. (Isuzu builds all of GM’s Diesels, here in the States at least.)
In regards to manual transmissions, I think a big part of it is because America is just a mahoosive and flat spread of land. Why shift yourself when you’ve got nothing but air between you and the horizon? Also, we generally like our cars big and comfy, even if cheap.

I do wish we’d buy more smog-pumpers and sticks. But what are ya gonna do?

One more thing, I’m with Klepto. I want a CTS-V wagon so bad.

Wagons were all the rage back in the 50s and 60s. Damn near every manufacturer had a wagon in their line up, stuff like:
1957 Plymouth Suburban, which rode on a wheelbase longer than most cars (120 inches);

to:
1961 Chevrolet Corvair Lakewood Station Wagon

These lil pipsqueaks were rear-engined and air-cooled.

Wagons aren’t the rage anymore but dammit, we’ve still got some awesome old family-haulin’ iron.

The CTS-V wagon accounted for 0.5% of CTS sales or only about 7,000 sold. With such dismal numbers I can’t expect the average person to know it exists.

A big part of the reason America has abandoned wagons is a loophole big enough to drive a truck through. Detroit couldn’t innovate to sell the large cars including wagons America wanted while meeting government regulations for fuel economy, so they sold SUVs because SUVs are classified as light trucks and not subject to the same regulations. England did not have that problem and European infrastructure is better suited for wagons anyway. I wouldn’t want to try navigating a huge SUV through London.

Then again people in England buy Diesels and Manual Transmissions much more too, where it’s just the opposite in America.

This is the first time I heard of it, thanks for mentioning it.

Also, note: While Americans aren’t so fond of Wagons now, they’re popular in England.

I’d rather have a CTS-V wagon. Even with my grudge against GM I will admit that was an impressive vehicle.

I think I should comment on the fanfic this art is for. Being one who loves wagons, I found this chapter of it (Rarity and the wagon) funny. Now hopefully someone gives Rarity a little course about maintaining cars and she’s not one who never changes the oil/has oil changed, that would be… (Rarity voice) DISASTROUS!

I’m not sure what to say about the art, I can say it works - sure - and yes I do draw, yet I think I could learn more about things to say regarding comments and suggestions on art. Rarity’s colors look what, G3 or G1? (Not sure which.) Perhaps I should draw something like this, in fact I already did yet I didn’t go to this depth on it.

How’s that?

@TheAntiCat

I don’t even mind /some/ wagons going to derbies as long as it’s stuff that’s plenty well rusted away that someone parted out, that includes the “Clamshell” wagons too - if not cared for they would rust out severely in the rear window channels and that’s expensive to fix.

Well, there is the Dodge Magnum (2005-2009):

With the notable exception of the Subaru Outback, station wagons are a dying breed in the American auto market. SUVs and crossovers took their place. Personally I wouldn’t mind owning a sporty wagon to get the practicality of a big trunk and a fun drive in one package.

I wouldn’t dare send a Roadmonster to a demo derby. There’s plenty of laughably bad shit from the 70s and 80s that needs to be wiped from the surface of the planet.

Darn it, Derpibooru. Why aren’t the photos loading? Well, here’s a link to the thread. Wagon photos on page 1, Truck photos on page 3.

Just don’t come across as someone who wants to smash it in a demolition derby if you’re interested in using the car. Full-Size Station Wagons have a reputation for that, less so for the 1991-1996 cars at this year and more so for 1971-1976 G.M. Full-Size cars which are increasing in scarcity in part due to this.

Someone in Pennsylvania had a 1975 Buick that was rear-ended in early 2015 and it still drove and it decimated the 2003 truck that hit it:

Looks relatively intact, yet I assure you the tailgate didn’t work after this.

Someone in my town has a Roadmaster in baby blue, complete with faded wood siding. I should offer to buy it next time I see him.

Not to disregard wagons, the large ones (I can’t speak for smaller ones just yet, I grew up with Dad driving a 198x Caprice Estate and I have a 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis) are incredibly comfortable to ride over a long road trip and as TheAntiCat said, they can haul nine people in them… They can also (if equipped) carry luggage on the roof (some didn’t have roof racks) and tow a trailer or boat all at once. (That depended if the car was optioned for it or not.) Lovely cars and I love the vinyl woodgrain siding some came with.

There was also the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, which was made for 1991 and 1992 model years.

Though station wagons are great, they do have a low roof compared to an SUV or Minivan. And this is coming from someone who loves wagons.

ROADMONSTER WAGON

Detuned Corvette engine, seating for 9 with the rear 3 passengers facing rearward and able to tow 5,000 pounds. To Hell with SUVs.

Those Buick Roadmasters were great cars along with the Caprice stationwagons.
