I think the mane 6 reason that Starlight is not to be trusted, so the only safe place for her to be is with them, where they can keep watch over her.  
Speaking of which, some quotes about Doctor Who:

I was talking about Starlight.

I think Starlight’s redemption makes a lotsa sense. After all, a number of villains didn’t have much real friends. And since I like lists, here is an incomplete one:
 
Luna became Nightmare Moon because she felt rejected.  
Babs Seed wanted to not be bullied.  
Diamond Tiara genuinely wanted friends but was abused by her mother.  
Discord never had any friends, and even after redeeming he only joined Tirek because nopony trusted him.  
Tirek was betrayed, not without reasons of course, but still, by his own brother, which left him even more bitter to no end.  
Sunset Shimmer too wasn’t keen on friendship.  
Gilda was born in an outright anomy, powered only by greed.  
Sombra was a non-pony mocked for being different, who had only one real friend and who saw his horrible destiny.  
Even SciTwi was friendless, which led indirectly to Midnight Sparkle.  
And I like to think that the only thing preventing Ahuizotl from becoming a threat is that he genuinely enjoys Daring Do’s company.
 
All of this chaotic listing just to say that the lack of friendship leads to becoming a villain, or insane, because loners are freak. You are now free to deconstruct those examples.

She got blasted by the rainbow and suddenly her personality was completely different.  
It was all shown blatantly on screen.  
That is nothing other than a wipe and rewrite.

She didn’t change on her own free will, she was forced like Luna was.

I don’t know, I liked the ending. It was rushed, sure, but then again, what isn’t on this show?

Oh yes she definitely ‘DESERVED’ this.

I’ll give Starlight a chance. I doubt she’ll be Sunset Shimmer great but this could work.  
She doesn’t need to be the 7th element of harmony, she just needs to be good.

Ofc it was handled badly.
 
But the episode itself was awesome.
 
Overall a nice two parter. Gave an old timer like me some good feeling: Great episode, shit ending was pretty much the usual since the very start.

I’ve made a large update to the upload ‘description’ that better elaborates on my feelings of the episode.
 
TL;DR tho -  
I feel like the redemption was handled badly.  
Not only too rushed, but it was a crazy amount of mood whiplash,  
asking us to feel bad for someone who was too jealous and selfish to accept a friend’s life changing,  
and went on to become a brainwashing dictator and reckless uncaring time manipulator just because of that.

At least Sunset had proper pacing for her character development. Starlight’s redemption was shoehorned within five minutes.

Pretty much this. It would be like in the Red Alert series, where because Einstein goes back and kills Hitler, when he arrives in the new timeline, he’s charged with all the crimes Stalin commits.

No punishment whatsoever? Redemption is fine but for fucks sake at least punish her in some way she attempted murder you can’t just let that slide.

uhh… shes a pony.. you don’t render such injustice as revenge upon them… that was her crime, and she has learned

Difference is that I was able to accept Starlight’s in the span of a few hours.
 
It took til Rainbow Rocks (and an unrelated character to cry bitch tears) for the former
