And as such Starlight Glimmer is a bad character through and through, she was barely passable in her debute, she was an absolute bore in that shitty finale and she is the reason season six was as abismal as it was. Nothing you say will change that.

Certainly not in our world, but in Equestria all you need is to say sorry and you’re basically off the hook. We’ve seen this before that Equestria is more idealistic when it comes to redeeming people. It’s implied that Discord tortured ponies physically, and was unrepentant initially, but a little bit of effort from Fluttershy and he was allowed to be free, even after he betrayed everyone during the Tirek two-parter. It’s a kids show at the end of the day, after all.
 
At the least Sunset got some manual labor as punishment, and didn’t get instantly forgiven, but she only didn’t kill Twilight because of plot. Had she kept going she could have brought about one of those horrible futures Starlight did intentionally. Would you say Sunset is worse than Starlight because she was fully aware of what her actions would lead to, unlike Starlight who was too focused on revenge to consider the ramifications?
 
Don’t get me wrong. It annoyed me that Starlight got no comeuppance for her behavior, her backstory sucked because it felt shoehorned in, got to become Twilight’s student, and then we see all her fears were baseless in the next two-parter if she had just put in the tiniest bit of effort to close the gap with Sunburst.
 
I do like her as a character though. She was just the victim of bad writing and OP powers.

Her inability to even grasp the ramifications of messing with the time stream makes her crime even worse, and even if she didn’t mean to destroy time in any regard she was still tampering with forces she shouldn’t have which is a crime onto itself. Regardless of her actual goal, regardless of her motives and regardless of her backstory, there is no excuse you can come up with that could justify letting her off the hook.

All her other misdeeds aside, Starlight had no idea she was creating timelines where the major villain won. To her she was just breaking up a friendship before it started. Ir wasn’t until Twilight actually dragged her into one of those terrible futures and Starlight saw it with her own eyes that she finally backed down.
 
It’s a minor just bugs me that people think Starlight sought the destruction of all Equestria by messing with the Sonic Rainboom when clearly she was thinking very narrowly and not considering the consequences of Twilight not becoming Celestia’s student and meeting her friends.
 
Her assumption was likely that if Twilight didn’t power the Elements than someone else would. Or perhaps she knew nothing at all about all those threats because she was spending all her time on the edge of Equestria in her little village and just thought it would be no big deal if Twilight never got her friends. No matter what way you look at it Starlight couldn’t commit to her revenge once she saw the ramifications it would have for the greater world of Equestria.

Actually, I didn’t necessarily imagine wings from the synopsis. I was just being annoyingly ambiguous. ;3

Man, I hope we can add “hilarious in hindsight” later on.

On another note, I wouldn’t mind her getting a Rainbow Power form (in fact, this gives me an idea for the fanfic I’m writing that will prominently feature her), just… not with the wings.

I would rather have her stay a unicorn and be the single strongest unicorn alive and second strongest in history, only slightly weaker than Starswirl.

When it comes to what I’ve seen so far, I don’t personally see how she’d have been notable enough to have developed or achieved anywhere near enough to deserve something like that, no matter what last-minute curveballs/asspulls the finale is going to do to bend the plot in her favor.
 
And because of despite that, I still fully expect Haber to do it.

It does however indicate lack of restraint or just social ineptitude at the very least. Very bad in combination with cosmic and/or political power. End of the world would be an exaggeration, but not that far off, I’d say.

Have you seen how trigger happy she gets with her magic? Using it to alter other ponies behavior no less? For me, No Second Prances comes to mind and that’s just from this season. Rewarding someone like that with this kind of power when they really haven’t done much to deserve it in the first place would be pure idiocy.
