Sometimes when an injury happened very quickly and in one clean hit, your brain fail to realized something was wrong and went into shock/confusion until a few seconds later that it finally register the pain.
Like seriously, this scene may look like an anime thing for “building suspense” but it is quite real. I’ve seen people with broken arm do a double take when they see their arm bend at an angle. There was the look of intrige, then surprise, and then confusion before they actually realized what is going on.
