I don't think it was never directly stated anywhere, but Mr. Davis not only read Garfield Minus Garfield, he allowed choice comics to be published in a physical book under that name, with a second segment containing GMG comics he himself made. Following the timeline, it was shortly after this that Jon finally hooked up with Liz and in general was given a better quality of life in the comics. Reading GMG, knowing Mr. Davis did so as well, and then noting Jon becoming less of a sadsack within a short period afterwards makes me draw certain conclusions. I don't feel up to researching interviews, though, it's just pattern recognition.
