No they’re not! The Romans fused Eros and Cupid into one awkward package because the Romans were stupid like that. Greek Eros is a primordial Eldritch Abomination that predates the Titans.

I am aware, as the previous conversation has indicated, of the Roman syncretism or interpretatio romana of Eros as Cupid. As I have pointed out to other respondents, this god also changed over time within Greek culture. The older version of Eros was a much more primal and pre-eminent creator deity than the later version, Cupid, who was the mischievous son of another goddess of the pantheon.
 
The original joke in fact hinged on the identification of the two entities: I said mistaking Eros for Cupid was like thinking pepper spray was like spicy food. Do you see the parallels? Spicy food and pepper spray both employ capsaicin, but the latter in a much more intense form. One would deduce from my construction of this joke, then, that I am aware that Cupid and Eros are the same thing, only that the latter is considerably more intense. The joke doesn’t work if they are not connected yet different.

Yeah, Eros, is a Protogenoi, the same class of being as Tartarus and Gaia. They are more sapient aspects of the universe than gods, and a heck of a lot more powerful than them.

 
So where’s Unico when you need him? In the original tale by Tezuka, Unico was able to best Cupid/Eros by a surprise headbutting, which was how the god managed to stab himself with his own love-making arrows and fall in love with Psyche.

Tell me something I don’t know. Still, Eros and Cupid are considered one in the same on a basic level. Same goes for Jupiter and Zeus.
