Well, if that one German spoiler is accurate, these Sea Ponies were originally hippogriffs who transformed themselves and went underwater to escape the Storm King.
 
Which makes me wonder just how nasty a piece of work he is if people escaping him literally had to change their species and live in a completely different environment to do so.

I hope the movie isnt too cheesy and “girly”

But they look way too different to the comic ones.

sea ponies are now canon outside of the comics.

So, we are going to get the shoo-be-doo in the movie? Because this scene sure looks like it.
