It’s pretty cute, but if you think there’s something subtle about it, you’re probably on the spectrum.  
I mean, the only way to make the communication here more in-your-face would require some cardboard signs with notes like “senpai pls notice me”, “get bent” etc.

Operative word being “almost.” I haven’t really counted, but I think the ratio is probably something like 20:1 in favor of “saving the world” over “almost destroying it.”  
Even if you try to count in all the cases where she directly caused damage and disruption on a significant but localized scale, one that can’t be really treated as a potentially world ending threat, I bet you won’t get higher than 5:1.  
So I’d say they’re sort of even at this point, except one of them is an old douchebag who literally couldn’t make friends to save his life.

Of course Twilight messed it up, bringing back the pillars without knowing what the spell was actually about was a complete mistake, however at least the other pillars didn’t stick to being stubborn and asked important questions such as “how many years have passed since we were gone?”  
Starswirl on the other hand just wanted to stay with his own criteria and conclusions, ignoring the fact that he was being a big douche to someone who also wanted to fix her mistake, and for someone who has always been portrayed to us like the equestrian version of Merlin, Da Vinci and Einstein combined, his attitude certainly overshadowed what Twily messed up. And just until the end when Twilight and Starlight got to talk with Stygian about what really happened he then decided to listen and apologize, not because he wanted, but because Stygian said it outloud and uninterrupted.
 
Also, one of the worst and most surreal nightmares that one could possibly have is the one of being hated and despised by someone whom you admire and respect without any chance of a possible forgiveness, right?
