How about we explain his magical potential compared to other dragons, that could definitely work as a plot point to explain his lack of wings; for an example consider dragons to have low amounts of dormant magic and this splits them into categories that effect their looks with winged dragons being the most common in current times, this way spike could be explained as descended from dragons that majored more in say elemental/just general Magic. this provides context and possibly a real reason he couldn’t hatch normally, he needed to absorb magic as a ‘youngling/egg’ to fully start true development as a dragon. this could easily give dragons more depth than the show gives(which is barley any, the most we know other than the show is that nice dragons exist but only in “Dragon Town”), this alone would help give more details about ancient history and may even give spike a more important dynamic along side twilight, a “Ying and Yang” sort of dynamic that works into starting something I would call: Guardians of Harmony(the name of the toys Hasbro made but better made by me); this gives spike a true reason for why he’s so special to the girls as well as why the cutie map reacts to him in such a way. this can start a sub plot witch can lead into ‘The Guardians of Harmony Arc’ where spike is tasked with finding the decedents of the creators of the elements(I’m going deep into fan lore zone here); those Decedents Being himself, Chrysalis, Thorax, Ember, Starlight/Sunset(either of them works), Discord/Eris(I have grown fond of the idea of Eris actually possibly existing so you could decide on weather this makes her canon or just give it to Discord); or at least something like that, rather than Spike just becoming a big dragon he will Use more magic and get a more slimming build similar to Ember’s design but slightly shorter(not due to age but to lack of greed) his scales will also get special markings relating to him becoming: ‘The Shield/Protector of Magic/Harmony”
 
I’m pretty sure you see where the rest of this would lead but this would mainly open to more than just the Mane 6 Being the lead heroes(i’ll be honest, having the elements just auto save the day 90% of the time gets boring) this would allow for more expansion of Equestria and more cast building as the Guardians will go around to solve Element level dangers and threats; Feedback on this idea would be apreciated

That’d be nice if we got some more dragon lore but I doubt it. If that were the case, surely we would have seen at least a few of the different types of dragons onscreen but all we’ve seen is wings, sharp teeth and firebreath. The only real differences between the dragons I’ve seen so far is size. As for the clumziness, I expect the writers to keep using it for gags and I don’t expect an explanation anytime soon.

What would be interesting is if they eventually point out that he is an Earthdragon/mountain dragon, not a normal winged dragon, just like the difference between a pegasus and an earth pony, and that instead of flight, he has other perks that he hasn’t discovered yet.
 
Heck, perhaps his personal thick scales are part of it since he even impressed Garble when he belly flopped on the lava and walked it off. It may even be why he’s “so clumsy” and prone to breaking things since an earth dragon is meant to be smashing through rock and digging through the ground all the time, which we DO know he’s super good at.

Couldn’t be any more controversial than when Twilight got wings. At the very least, we could get an explanation of why he doesn’t have them and if he ever gets them. As far as I can remember, the giant tailed dragon in DQ has been the only other dragon we’ve seen without wings. Plus, what would be so special about him without wings? He’d be a flightless dragon. That seems more like a setup for a ‘you’re handicapped’ ep like what we got with Scootaloo. I also doubt we’re gonna get an origin story with him. Even if we do, I doubt it’d be anything as big lorewise as that. Like I said earlier, I’m not letting myself get my hopes up this time around.

Adding wings won’t improve anything. Basically like what happened to Twilight, the wings meant nothing, and for Spike, would mean even less.
 
Worse yet, it’d be inconsistent with any of his grown forms and would receive quite the backlash. You remember the great purging at the end of Season 3, yes? So many sites utterly fell apart and people left the fandom in droves at that point.
 
What WOULD work for him is better explaining his origin, maybe even point out that him lacking wings makes him SPECIAL. Heck, maybe Spike’s egg was given to Celestia by Scorpan and there was a legend that only a specific pony could hatch it and that Celestia would need to teach said student due to their potential abilities.
 
It’s like making Scootaloo fly or fixing Derpy’s eyes; they’re no longer special.

Yeah, I still remember the hubub about the mini throne he got at the end of S4 only for us to get Princess Spike as his only ep in S5. Not getting my hopes up this time around.

I think giving him wings would be great. I always felt they overplayed the contrast aspect of Spike. They try to take the aspects of what normally make a dragon a dragon (strength, size, toughness, being headstrong, flying) and turn it upside down for Spike’s character but I feel they took it a few steps too many. Instead, this reliance on sticking Spike as a sort of inverse dragon is inhibiting him from growing oth physically and as a character. Maybe letting Spike embrace being a dragon, if only by a little bit, wouldn’t be so much of a bad thing.

The good things they started doing with him:  
>Chemistry with Starlight re-situated him as a competent and snarky friend.  
>chose to participate in the gauntlet of fire to deny garble or other like-minded dragons from attacking equestria, and in the process, made friends with Ember, brought friendship to the dragon lands, and has a connection with the now leader of the dragons.  
>put his friendship, fame, and freedom on the line to prove Thorax wasn’t an evil monster. This act risked him not only losing the fame of the rather dimwitted crystal ponies, but also risked him being marked as a traitor to the empire and even personally exiled/imprisoned by Shining Armor. This eventually lead to the one factor that prevented Chrysalis from attaining a total takeover on a second attack.  
>proved a level of maturity that no one expected out of him and even outright stood up to Discord, even taking pity on him  
>His snark and no-nonsense attitude finally caused a crack in Rarity, Pinkie Pie, and Applejack’s stories when they were fighting and revealed that 90% of it was massive embellishment.  
>His “mistake” of inviting Thorax and Ember over on the same day resulted in Ember and Thorax meeting and becoming friends, thus making the changelings and dragon leaders exchange important information on how to better help their people. He also actually managed multiple other friendship problems that day as well, far more then most ponies do. He also was so good as juggling Thorax and Ember away from eachother, the Map forced him to panic with a “friendship problem” that drew Thorax and Ember together in the first place.
 
Overall he’s been much more useful and a more enjoyable character.

welp either way, I can already tell ya the show won’t give spike and different design, as we’ve seen from everything else they will treat him the last and least with anything like this; at best you can just expect him to either grow an inch or two or just say he’s older but never show such change. remember when looking forward to anything spike related set your expectations low and keep them there

I agreed, most cartoon characters don’t really ages, so I don’t see this happening. I’m fine as he is for now.

I can understand not liking that, but other than some fan mockups, we don’t have a teen-spike of any other sort to go off of.
 

 

 
This is more aesthetically pleasing, but I feel this makes him TOO large. As I said, I think we’d prefer if he was around Ember/Garble sized. I got nothing against him not looking misproportioned.

I would like to see him grow a little bit.

Nothing wrong with growing him up just a bit to be around the stature of Gable and Ember and let him be able to flex his abilities a little more.
 
However, the implied “Controlled greed growth” ALA Hulk/Loose Cannon would be interesting to see.
 
The ONE thing I DON’T want them to do is give him wings.
 
His lack of wings makes his dynamic with the ponies and other dragons all the more interesting and, while some see it as a handicap, it makes him unique.
 
Giving Twilight wings made her unique but it’d make Spike common at that point; we wouldn’t even “need” characters like Ember to show up anymore, and I doubt people want to stop seeing Ember.

Not a chance. Spike’s model is too consistent; he’s always been a “baby dragon” even since G1 (okay, he was a little-old-man dragon in G3, but still a baby in size). Hasbro is not going to let the show writers turn him into a teenager.
 
One thing that might happen is Spike could learn to control (more-or-less) his greed-growth, as suggested in the Guardians of Harmony line. Maybe Twilight could teach him a spell or he’ll discover some artifact that will allow him to do it. Basically, he’d be the dragon equivalent of Billy Batson turning into Captain Marvel (or Bruce Banner turning into The Incredible Hulk, more likely).
