The sass (“A demon. I turned into a raging she demon”), the anger (nearly throttling Trixie), the tendency to confront her adversaries in secluded hallways, the mix of positive and negative emotions in conflict in her (Sunset’s many mixed emotions regarding Adagio’s jab at her past villainy, letting Spike go and trying to get what she wants without going the puppy killing route, Sunset tearing up as she hated the power of the crown stripping away her good impulses completely).
 
And, the most important part…REASON.
 
EG1 timeskips into the future to EG2 in an envirionment that perfectly explains why Sunset is who she is now. Its called storytelling. A person who timeskips into a severe envirionment (for example, everybody hates her) and a major life change is going to cause them to grow. Despite the many flaws of the first film, Sunset’s reintroduction in EG2 is what writers should strive for. Timeskips are inevitable for movies but a good sequal can paint a portrait of what happened inbetween.
 
The film gives us a portrait of what the past months were like for EG1 Sunset, and how she became EG2 Sunset.
 
This may not be the case for you, different strokes, different folks afterall, but many of us see the portrait and transition between her past and present self. You can give your own spin on it, but many are going to have long agreed counterarguments. Sunset is overall not a divisive character because most see her as well written.

It’s true though, Sunset Shimmer did fundamentally change overnight as far as onscreen appearances go.
 
She went from a generic Alpha Bitch of a megalomaniac, to suddenly “muh woobie who can do no wrong”, with very few hints of her former characterization at all. It’s almost like the Friendship Rainbow ^TM outright killed the character she used to be via brainwashing.

EG Sunset and RR Sunset are barely even same characters. She was a powerhungry, egoistic cunt. and at the start off RR, she’s already a good, matured person and even a good leader without showing any on screen development. She’s fundamentally a shallow character because of that. It baffles me that you’re actively discrediting Starlight’s gradual climb while worshipping Sunset “flawless friendship goddess” shimmer. Fucking fanboys, man.

I haven’t forgotten that factor, but it’s not much to work with. Early Sunset and Twilight are both screwed up in the head as well, but for identifiable reasons. They reacted to the pressures of being the apprentice to Celestia herself by becoming either hyper ambitious, or hyper dependent. Understandable AND dependent on the individual.
 
If we can only pin down that Starlight is “screwed up in the head”, then it’s just a lazy excuse for the writers to do anything with her y’know?

One factor to consider is that Sunset was mainly entitled and power hungry. Starlight is, to be frank, seriously screwed up in the head.

You can’t deny that Sunset is actually given lasting grief for her actions, almost the entire school hated her openly for many months after the EG1 incident, AND she has given 110% to reflect on her actions. And she doesn’t always succeed! She has quite a bit of a temper.
 
I never said that everything Starlight does is bad, don’t put words in my mouth.
 
I said that the amount of unrepentant bad decisions during her parole time is extremely high, she even tries to shy away and deflect from learning from her mistakes, much to the disgust of characters like Celestia and Luna, and King Thorax. There are a lot of “srsly, wth is wrong with you” faces to her.
 
One thing? Sunset’s temper, her need to chew out others overboard when they make stupid decisions. She’s also constantly learning to improve from her past mistakes and relationships, like how Sunset and Flash become friends again in EG4.
 
Sunset IS a natural born leader and has the most experiance with magic, but she’s never put herself on a Celestia high pedastal, she knows when to default to her friends for advice.
 
The old Sunset never left, she was just one dimensional because she believed she was right about everything and that she was entitled to everything. (A common mistep when a goddess makes you an independant apprentice)
 
Is Sunset skilled in many areas? Yes! That’s part of the source of her issues! She is the closest thing Celestia hadls to a first born daughter in 1000 years, her first personal apprentice. She developed an Alexander the Great complex because she met those expectations, causing her to grow arrogant.
 
Sunset isn’t flawless. One of her main weakness is a remnant of her past, her temper, and I really like that aspect. Yet at the same time, the amount of effort Sunset does to reflect and learn is massive. It shows that the writers really care about her development and putting effort into it.
 
Reformed Starlight’s development started off by the show simply SKIPPING the transition from villain to trusted, Spike hugging life long friend. No one gives her grief for her past, and they only distrust her after she does something obviously wrong, often stuff her more adult, more intelligent machevellian S5 self would think is obvious, at least in the distinction.
 
I just dont see any effort put into S6+ Starlight.

But we’re getting off track! Starlight is not 100% flawed, but she is a divisive character for many legitimate reasons. This conversation has been done to death.
 
My question to others is whether Starlight would be a better teacher, or Discord. Or neither, that’s a legitimate argument as well.
