okay then, we’ll go over all of Sunset’s traits, one by one. we’ll compare her now to how she once was in EqG 1. >=D
 
Cute: now, puppy dog eyes and a cherubic smile – then, a slasher smile fit for a swaggering monster.  
Sexy: one of only two consistent traits she has.  
Intelligent: now, has twice the IQ as Princess Twilight – then, a thoughtless, malevolent idiot.  
Elegant: now, looks graceful even in the most hideous outfit and is charmingly mild-mannered – then, only looked good in leather and acted like a barbarian.  
Sweet: now, would make all the guys (and gals) swoon – then, would’ve killed them all for fun… and profit.  
Beautiful Voice: now, sounds like her voice is gonna break – then, sounded like she meant business.  
Badass: now, sometimes comes off as a douchebag – then, an attitude fit for a cold, bitchy loner.  
Comprehensive: now, not always, as she was an inconsiderate jerk to Sci-Twi in EqG 3 and to The Dazzlings in EqG 2 – then, only cared about herself and no one else.  
Kind: now, fuck yeah – then, hell no!  
Leadership: now, the only driving force of the HuMane Seven – then, tyrannized all her schoolmates and had two lowly sycophants do most of her dirty work.  
Artistic Talent: now, the best and most talented painter ever; would put all the other painters, sculptors, and designers throughout human history to shame – then, couldn’t even draw a circle.  
Plays Guitar: now, doesn’t make any sense, as this trait was pulled out of the blue in EqG 2, considering her lack of experience with such instrument – then, didn’t know how to play a damn single musical instrument, not even the triangle!  
Biker Babe: VROOOM VROOOM! one of only two consistent traits she has.  
Worker: now, zigzagged, as she does help around the school and does her homework and classwork, but avoids making amends and taking responsibility for her past actions – then, shirked her responsibilities constantly and cheated during competitions and exams.  
Powerful: now, the HuMane Seven (and the rest of the world) would be nothing without her – then, the whole world was better off dead without her barking down their necks.

sounds to me like she’s not, as she’s the worst reformed villainess in cartoon history; Aria Blaze would have made a better reformed escapist character than her! muahahahahaha! >:3

okay, joking aside, I find something wrong with this picture…
 
…if there’s anything I learned from My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, it’s that you get anything you want without having to work for it, pin all your problems on anyone and anything other than yourself, and that you don’t have to take responsibility for any of your actions; all these are things I learned from Sunset Shimmer. no seriously, these are messages I am getting from watching this character.
 
another problem I have with her that everyone else is fine with is that she’s so goddamn motherfucking chickenshit perfect! she has no flaws whatsoever that would’ve made her an actual realistic and relatable character – she basically a walking fantasy! all the other characters have flaws and foibles, so why doesn’t Sunset have any? all her flaws are temporary – they come and go – and she acquired skills that she didn’t work for to earn them. and lest we forget, she had none of these attributes in Equestria Girls. but starting in Rainbow Rocks, she was immediately promoted to Mary Sue status: no inherent flaws, abilities and attributes that don’t fit her well, and being the only driving force of the entire series. for example, in Equestria Girls, she was shown to be a complete meathead (someone who isn’t very intelligent), whereas in Rainbow Rocks, she’s an instant genius. it does not make sense. >~<
 
I like Sunset Shimmer, but I feel insulted by the fact that she doesn’t have much for me to relate to her. I’d like to add more, but I don’t have the time right now. if there’s something you feel that I left out or haven’t elaborated on, feel free to ask or leave your thoughts.

Of course it was originally overhyped to Tartarus and back. Especially after the weird changes Friendship Games got, her relationship and possible return to Equestria was one of THE open ends to her character. Not on the elephant in the room called ‘meeting Celestia again’ but close.
 
Just being in a realm with Celestia again would have been a massive step. The cuts in FG really put into focus how much she was closer to pony!Twi compared to her human friends. Her story in LoE was essentially embracing magic again. It was all leading up towards something meaningful, be it a decision where she belongs or a struggle to juggle her identities or something similar.
 
Writing it in a synopsis was almost like saying “The CMC get their Cutie Marks”, “Rainbow Dash joins the Wonderbolts” or “Meet Applejack’s parents”. Not because it was her entire goal but because it was something to set up her further path and show us what the series had in store for her.
 
But all we got out of it was her pony model in a ligted environment, a new colour for her magic and a bit of filler reserved for general awkwardness. Nothing of value would have been lost if Starlight just stumbled through the portal herself. Ultimately it simply didn’t matter.
 
Add how she almost immediately was written out of the conflict after merely one scene of meaningful interactions with Starlight and how she and her friends were utterly useless [both in actions and mind] inside the Mirror Realm, the short didn’t do anything of value with the EG-setting or -characters despite a well-teased setup giving us two much-wished elements: Sunset in Equestria and Sunset meeting Starlight.
