Funny enough I had a headcanon of Lightning Dust being Scootaloo’s half sister.

Scootaloo will become Ld’s new mentee and sister

Spitfire could at least have made Lightning Rainbows wingpony instead of humiliating her and kicking her out.  
If she actually had done her Job and talked to Lightning earlier, the ballon incident would never have happened.
 
Wonderbolt Academy is a restricted military area, it is not a good idea to enter it in a ballon (especially during training).
 
Lightning did what Spitfire expected of her (at least she thought so).

Well Spitfire can’t really punish herself.  
Twilight and her friends? They couldn’t know. After all, everypony has the right to travel in balloon, even near the academy.  
Rainbow Dash? She was the wing pony. She believed in Lightning because Spitfire said earlier that she pushed herself harder, also because Lightning Dust was the leader, she was rewarded and encouraged by Spitfire.  
So Rainbow wanted to be just like Lightning. After the tornado she instantly regretted it while Lightning Dust was like “THAT WAS AWESOME BLA BLA”. She was PROUD of it! That girl is out of control.
 
So to conclude, Spitfire decided to punish Lightning because of all the mischief she caused, but also because of her mentality.

she only did one thing wrong and she was already punished, it doesn’t mean she is still a bad pony. She isn’t a wonderbolt now because she is misunderstood and has been ignored. it is their fault not hers

Lightning Dust is at fault. So are Raibow, Spitfire, Twilight and the others. Ony one of this ponies got an (excessive) punishment. That is simply not fair.
