Disagreed. TWILIGHT is the immature and childlish one. Though the show sides with her childlish outlook, since this is a kiids’ shoow? Star always seemed like she was several years older. EVen now she clearly has grown-up concerns about every situation they meet that just don’t register to cute naive Twilie.
 
Which is why the whole “child teaches a grown-up” and moving under the same roof thing was kiiinda wee bit creepy, like she even changed her hairstyle to not to look so old. xD
 
Anyway yes,whatever friendship reformation programme was underway concluded that same season, and Starlight’s now essentially her bff. Like they can pretend that “student’” thing if that’s Twilie’s kink but clearly she just loves being with someone who is her equal. She may be fond of AJ and the rest but she can’t do spells with them, like Rarity’s the only unicorn even and she doesn’t even do nonbasic magic. STarlight is like everything TWi has waited for (uh…I mean nonromantically), a student who is not just a scholar of magic but equally powerful and talented.No wonder they get along so well.
 
In fact the whole student/reform farce even made it possible in a sense, because one of Twi’s many flaws is that she really likes being in control, being the one who does the talking, the authority. Had she met someone equal casually, they’d have rightfully called it into question why Twilight was making herself the leader so much.  
But since she got a friend who was already submissive, that established a role that Twily could feel VERY comfortable with. And it doesn’t matter in the long run because they’ll be like friends anyway, SG just occassionally pleasing T’s ego with the “yes, you are the teacher/master” cuz all she wants is to hear that, not to actually force her will.

Yeah, I’m aware of that, so don’t worry that much about my intelligence, or lack thereof, lol. Just saying that it might be a sign that they’re older, coupled with the other potential signs.
 
In the end, yeah, it probably doesn’t matter that much anyway.

You do know it’s possible for older people to have children too, right? Twilight and Starlight could be the exact same age, and Starlight’s parents can still be a decade older than Twilight’s.
 
I’m in the Starlight is younger camp, but I don’t think it matters much either way.

Oh, don’t ever doubt that Starlight utterly loves Twilight. It’s just that it’s familial love, not romantic.

See, I look at Sunburst and just see someone who’s only a couple of years out of college, not someone in their late 20’s. In my mind, Twilight’s in her mid-20s by now, and Starlight is maybe 21 or 22. They’re close in age, but Twilight’s the big sister there.
 
It’s hard to tell with ponies. They all look the same age till you get to the obviously elderly and middle-aged ones. I just go by how Twilight was basically a grad student at the start, about fours years seem to have passed on the show, and Sunburst just strikes me as being old enough to be on his own but young enough that his mom is hassling him about his future.
 
As for Twilight’s parents, I put that down to them being drawn only barely older than the Mane 6 when first introduced and then their designs were never updated. If Twilight is in her mid-20s, and she’s a second child who was still pretty young when Shining Armor was in high school), then her parents are probably at the very least pushing 50.

There’s also the fact that ||Sunburst’s mother, and Starlight’s father seem to be older than say, Twilight’s parents, judging by how they seemed to have wrinkles, while Twilight’s don’t.||That being said, I don’t think she’s too much older than Twilight, maybe three to four years or so, as you said.
 
ETA: Starlight being older also helps explain how she could hold a candle to Twilight in a fight: she just had more experience. (that, and Twilight’s combat record isn’t the best to begin with, case in point: just blast Tirek with all your might and teleport around a bit. I also like to think you don’t need to be more powerful than Twilight to do well in fighting her, though it’s stupid to say she isn’t a pretty powerful unicorn, in any case.)

Actually I find it even more tragic (and hence, more hilarious, if you have a wicked sense of humor) that she’s about as old if not older than Twilight.
 
I think Starlight’s actually older though. Look at Sunburst. The dude can pass of as thirty or late twenties guy and we know Starlight’s not that far off from him.
 
Since I love Dragon Ball Z, I’m gonna use this picture as reference to how old they are.  

 
Goku was 25 and Vegeta was 29 when they first met. So I’m gonna go with that. Twilight is currently 25 and Starlight 29.

Twilight’s fretting over Starlight in Celestial Advice and A Royal Problem sealed the relationship in my mind. The two of them are like family now, and Starlight still sees Twilight as her mentor and emotional support. They are at the very least like sisters now, and at most like mother-daughter.
 
Starlight “graduated” ages ago, but still lives with Twilight. Considering how there’s been no mention of her real family yet (Assuming you didn’t watch that leaked episode a few months back), my headcanon is that Starlight has adopted Twilight and Spike as her family. She’s comfortable there and probably loves having a stable home where she’s loved and appreciated.
 
The closeness in ages doesn’t really matter, either. Starlight arrived there as a really immature young adult. Twilight may only be a few years older, but Starlight up until fairly recently still acted like she was barely more than a child. I kind of wish she’d been portrayed as being a teen instead of just looking like she’s as old as the rest of the Mane 6.
