Not having wings is one thing I liked about him. He was a different type of dragon which also made him special. Growing up could of literally meant him growing a few more inches in height.

Spike just became another generic dragon in my eyes. He was special to me because he was different for not having wings. Now he’s just bleh.

Don’t see why it should.  
Wings for Twilight meant a potentially different status/role/etc which is why people freaked out back then.  
Wings for Spike just means he’s likely reached puberty.
