That only works until the intended gift/destination comes in. Then, it’s just a matter of the person’s reaction.

if you don’t know what to get someone for a present or where to take them say “you will never guess what I got you” or where we are going for. then most of the time they keep guessing for a while. Just say I’m not going to tell and use the list they guess as your focus on what to get or where to take them. This feels a little along those lines.
